Breaking Bad is considered one of the best shows ever, but is it good for learning a new language? In 62 episodes, the characters repeat tons of phrases and expressions that native speakers use often; however, sometimes it’s a bit hard to understand the vocabulary used in many episodes. That’s why I’ll analyze the dialogues in 62 Breaking Bad episodes to find the ones that would be easy to understand for you.

First, let’s compare the vocabulary used in Breaking Bad with other shows such as Friends, The Big Bang Theory and The Simpsons to know the pros and cons of watching this show.

Should You Learn a Foreign Language with Breaking Bad?

After analyzing the dialogues in 62 Breaking Bad episodes, I found that the vocabulary difficulty in dialogues is close to the average Friends episode. Some scenes in quiet places help understand dialogues easily. However, this doesn’t mean that a Breaking Bad episode would be as easy to understand as a Friends episode.

The speech pace, slang, intonation and word pronunciation makes Breaking Bad episodes difficult to understand even for advanced language learners. In addition to that, unlike sitcoms such as Friends or The Big Bang Theory, Breaking Bad is filmed in locations where there a lot of background noise, like on the streets, or where the characters have to whisper to keep their conversations private, like in restaurants. Locations like those make listening comprehension challenging; however, you should get used to it because they represent situations in which a language is used in real life.

That being said, Breaking Bad is an excellent option for intermediate and advanced learners who want to take their listening skills to the next level and speak like Americans do.

What Breaking Bad episodes are the best for you to learn a foreign language?

A show with a chemistry teacher and crystal meth dealer as main characters would naturally have lots of advanced words and slang within dialogues, which might be good or bad for your language level. It’d be good if you’re an advanced learner who’s eager to develop his/her vocabulary further, but it’d be bad if your language level doesn’t help you understand most of the conversations. Either way, I ranked the 62 Breaking Bad episodes by difficulty of vocabulary, so you can start with the easiest episodes in terms of vocabulary.

I noticed that the episodes in the last seasons (S4-S5) tend to have a more basic vocabulary, while the ones in the first seasons present less basic vocabulary. For example, Buried (S5E10) is the episode with the simplest vocabulary, while 4 Days Out (S2E9) has the most difficult English vocabulary in 62 episodes.

Every time before I watch a show in a foreign language on Netflix, I quickly check the difficult words that are used in the episode. Then I look up the meaning and listen to the pronunciation of unknown words on an online dictionary like Oxford.

This method helps me increase my chances to understand dialogues. If you’re learning English, you can do it too by using the table below!

Last but not least: Pronunciation of character names

You can the names of main and minor characters in the following wordcloud:

You’d easily get used to the pronunciation of main characters such as Walter, Jesse, Skyler and Hank because they’re mentioned often. That’s why I’d like you to especially check the pronunciation of names of minor characters such as Skinny Pete, Badger, Jane and all last names like Schrader and Fring. They’re mentioned less often, so the chances of not recognizing them would be high.

Conclusion

Breaking Bad is an excellent option for intermediate and advanced language learners who want to improve their language skills. By watching the show, you’ll learn expressions and slang that natives speak frequently. If you already watched Breaking Bad dubbed in your native language, re-watch the episodes that have the most basic vocabulary, check the box that contains advanced words and listen to the pronunciation of character names in the target language.
