Summary

The article "Layers of the Mind" discusses the complexity of life, suggesting that while life's intricacies can be seen as complications, they are actually layers that can be understood with perspective.

Abstract

The piece, inspired by a journal entry from an individual named Diana C., delves into the nuanced perception of life's complexity. It acknowledges the potential for individuals to complicate their own lives, yet it also argues that life's intricacies are a result of the various roles people play in our lives, ranging from minor characters to central figures. The author posits that life is not inherently complicated when one knows where to seek answers. This concept is illustrated through a parable shared by the author's uncle, which humorously demonstrates the subjective nature of truth and perception, suggesting that different perspectives can all be 'right' in their own way.

Opinions

  • The author agrees with the statement that individuals often contribute to the complexity of their own lives.
  • There is an acknowledgment that life presents intricate situations due to the multitude of interactions with different people.
  • The term 'intricate' is preferred over 'complicated' to describe life, implying a delicate and interwoven nature rather than an unnecessarily complex one.
  • The author suggests that life's intricacies become less complicated when one understands where to find answers.
  • The parable of the Rabbi and the couple's marital problems serves to highlight the subjectivity of truth and the validity of multiple perspectives being correct simultaneously.

Hmmm. I know what you mean and agree with the statement:

Life can never be a complicated journey without us being the ones complicating it

I also disagree.

Life has plenty of complicated situations; with so many actors having bit parts, parts, supporting roles and leads, including those seeking to see their name in lights (says under my breath, “narcissistic/emotional vampires”) in our improvisational skits, and skits within skits…so perhaps intricate is a better word.

Life is intricately layered, but not all that complicated, when one knows where to look for the answers.

I’m reminded of one of my favorite parables my Jeckyll-and-Hyde uncle would impart:

A young couple are having marital problems. The wife’s mother takes them to see the Rabbi, expecting him to affirm whatever the mother’s view. The wife speaks first and tells the Rabbi what’s going on and her complaints, and the Rabbi says, ‘You’re right.’

Husband says: ‘wait you didn’t hear me yet.’ Husband tells his side of things, and the Rabbi says, ‘You’re right.’

Then the wife’s mother, quite upsettedly exclaims, “How can they both be right?’

Rabbi says, ‘You’re right!’
