Laundry and Coffee

GiaB prompt #22 intimacy

As I rummaged through the overflowing laundry bin at the bottom of the laundry chute I came across my husband’s favorite bike shirt. I was sorting for a load of darks and the shirt is white, but I know that doesn’t matter to him because when he does the laundry he never sorts the whites from the darks. “I should just throw this in too,” I thought. “I know he will want it for his ride coming up this weekend.” Although it went against all laundry rules I’ve ever known, I grabbed the shirt and threw it in. One lone white in a sea of darks. I smiled as I closed the lid.

The lone white is intimacy in action. The lone white is the simplicity of doing something for your partner only because you know it will make life easier for them. Intimacy lives within the simple thoughts and gestures that coexist among the mundane of daily life.

Later on, while folding laundry together on the couch the bike shirt appeared at the top of the pile.

“I washed your shirt for you so you would have it for your ride this weekend,” I said to my husband as I folded it and put it into the basket.

“Thank you!” he exclaimed. “That was really nice of you.”

In the morning, I wake up next to a hot cup of coffee, creamed and sugared just the way I like it.

“Your coffee is on the nightstand,” my husband says as I start to wake up.

I don’t ask for it, but it arrives every morning; a small gesture but a large display of intimacy. The mornings I wake up first, I bring the coffee. It’s our natural ebb and flow.

Coffee delivered bedside and favorite shirts washed out of order. After eleven years of marriage, this is intimacy for us. Small acts with big meanings, we anticipate and meet the others’ needs with expecting nothing in return while trusting the other will do the same.

Intimacy in action.

Thank you, Lisa Alexander for tagging me in this prompt challenge! I recently have enjoyed pieces by Laura Fox, Alessandra Figueiredo, Patricia Rosa, and Jean Campbell. Maybe they will have something to say about this prompt, too.
