My Publications on Medium
If you want to write for any of these I’m accepting new writers for—just let me know which one and drop a comment here.
The Bureau is about the business of creating things. Accepting new writers.
The SOA is where I keep my writing on history, including true crime. Accepting new writers.
Never Mind the Breadbox: Here’s the Food Blogger is where I write about food and keep my recipes. If you don’t like food blogs that have a whole life story up front, and can handle my salt content—it’s for you.
The Dread Mule is a joint effort from my “real,” business: Fletcher & Co. Booksellers. It’s a literary rag, for fiction, poetry, and personal essays. I’m actively looking for writers, and have a piece on that pinned to my profile, but you can find it here too.
The blog for my bookstore, Fletcher & Co. You can find my book and movie reviews here, and other things related to books, their history, and book culture.
The Bio
I’m Lance. Books are my life.
I don’t mean, ‘I like books,’ though I love them. A lot of my best memories involve books.
I mean that most of my life revolves around books—I sell books, I’m a bookbinder, I edit books for authors (copy, line, and developmental, and specialize in developmental), I help promote books and their authors, and I review books. If you need a little help, or you want to buy me a coffee, you can do that below—and I’ll love you forever.

You can also find me over on NewsBreak, where I write about state and local content, mostly. But I share my book and movie reviews over there, too.
My favorite story
My favorite story about books is from when I was knee-high to the encyclopedia.
My grandpa, my Pop, would read to me, when I was learning to read.
He’d read all kinds of things to me. Picture books, chapter books—and much to Nanny’s (my grandma) dismay—his Perry Mason novels and the Weekly World News.
If y’all wonder why I turned out like this, that’ll be why.
Fun facts
Here’s some fun facts about me, if you’re feeling extra nosy:
- I’m a Rinzai Zen Buddhist. Can’t stand Alan Watts, so don’t bring him up unless y’all want me to rant.
- My least favorite books? Catcher in the Rye and Atlas Shrugged.
- My favorites? Nabokov’s Pale Fire, Neil Gaiman’s American Gods, and Mark Z. Danielewski’s House of Leaves.
- My favorite poets? Pablo Neruda and T.S. Eliot. Tied for second place though, with Gwendolyn Brooks.
- I’m a Southerner, a Texan. Love the South, hate its politics and xenophobia. I write about it a bit here and there.
- I’m a third-generation church pianist. I’d never known that until my mom’s funeral. Her mom was also a church pianist and organist. I ended up teaching myself to play, and I’ve picked up side money here and there from it.
- I’m a multi-instrumentalist (guitar, bass, organ, piano, and vocals—if you want to count that), but piano is my fave.
- On occasion, I’ll sing to my friends via voice messages to try to brighten their day.
Things I’ve done
Worth mentioning in polite company, anyway:
- I’ve produced a few small plays.
- I’ve sold my own poetry and fiction, under my pen name.
- Sold one play under my pen name.
- I’ve worked as a reporter—my first news beat was business and education.
- I broke into writing covering local events, concerts mostly.
- I’ve worked as a librarian.
- My education and most of my traditional work is in psychology.
- Interviewed several authors and musicians for my reporting and press releases.
- I’ve done research for several podcasts, and worked here and there in advisory business and PR roles.
- I’ve been an old/rare bookseller for over 3 years now. I started selling when I’d quit my day job (at the time) to take care of my mom during her fight with cancer. I was given the option of working 60 hour weeks or quitting. Best decision I ever made, was quitting.
- I rag on the Antiquarian Booksellers’ association a lot. I refuse to join. Another one of those, “don’t ask unless you want to see that little vein pop out of my forehead,” things.
Where to find me
Obviously you can find me here. My whole profile, if you didn’t make it here that way, is right here.
For just about anywhere else, I have a couple of Linktrees for that.
Thanks for joining me on my creative journey—and don’t forget that I’m here to help you with yours, too.
