Lack of Transparency from Scotch Whisky Auction Feels Slimy
I am an avid scotch fan. Sadly a lot of scotch doesn’t come to the US so I have to sometimes go hunting for it. One option is auction sites in the UK that will ship to the US. There are quite a few of them, and most of them are a pretty pleasant experience.
Recently I had a very bad experience with one of them, Scotch Whisky Auction. After quite a few back and forth emails they failed to make it right so I wanted to share my story with everyone else so you can steer clear.
Most auctions allow you to hold bottles in their warehouse until you have enough bottles to fill up a box to save on shipping. This latest auction helped me fill up a box, and boy was I excited. I put in my request for a quote for shipping. I’ve been waiting for some of these bottles for about 6 months.
The quote came back and it was $130 higher than what was estimated on their site. I thought they made a mistake so I emailed them back to clarify and get an itemized list of the estimate. It turns out it wasn’t a mistake, but they were charging an extra $130 “COVID Fee”, on top of the already high $200 uninsured delivery fee to ship the bottles. When I questioned them, their reply was “it’s out of our hands, it’s the fee that the courier charges us.”
This felt weird because I have personally had many packages in the last couple of months shipped to me and none of them had a COVID Fee. I told them I understood if it was out of their hands, but I’d like to talk to their courier to confirm the COVID fee, and really just understand the reasoning behind it. But every time I asked for the courier information I was ignored.
So here we stand. Them holding my bottles hostage, and me feeling that I made a mistake trusting them to honor their part of the deal. Even if their hands were tied there shouldn’t be a problem with disclosing who the courier is. But we all know their hands aren’t tied. If they actually cared about providing good customer service they could just switch courier services to one that didn’t charge an unnecessary fee. I know they exist because I’ve used them myself.
So in summary, my recommendation is to stay away from Scotch Whisky Auctions. Even if they are telling the truth the way they are going about it feels slimy, underhanded, and definitely not a pleasant experience. I would hate to see how they handle when things REALLY go wrong.
So my recommendation is if it’s not too late avoid Scotch Whisky Auctions completely and participate in one of the others.
