Summary

The text discusses the distinctions between knowledge, wisdom, and AI, advocating for a cautious approach to AI in the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, emphasizing local production and sustainability.

Abstract

The article reflects on the nature of knowledge as "justified true belief" and the process by which information is transformed into knowledge, shaping our worldview and actions. It distinguishes wisdom, the capacity for sound judgment in life and conduct, as a social construct subject to context. AI is portrayed as a set of tools lacking self-awareness or true intelligence, despite its name. The author notes the rise of machine learning and deep learning as byproducts of AI research, yet stresses the challenges in validating complex AI processes due to hype and misinformation. The Fourth Industrial Revolution is highlighted as a convergence of technologies that demands a reevaluation of our reliance on machine frameworks, especially considering their vulnerability to global events and resource limitations. The way forward is envisioned as simplifying supply chains and transitioning to local production of essential goods, financed by taxing non-renewable resources. The article concludes with a recommendation for an AI service that offers similar capabilities to ChatGPT Plus at a lower cost.

Opinions

  • Information becomes knowledge when associated with one's worldview, influencing actions and their perceived value.
  • Knowledge is essential for nurturing future generations, and its pursuit is a lifelong endeavor.
  • Wisdom is seen as the ability to make the right judgments, contingent on societal norms and context.
  • AI, despite its name, lacks consciousness and intelligence, serving only as a tool for processing data.
  • AI's development has produced useful applications like machine learning and deep learning, though these are not truly indicative of intelligence.
  • The author is critical of the hype and misinformation surrounding AI due to the difficulty in understanding its complex processes.
  • The Fourth Industrial Revolution necessitates a move towards sustainability and self-sufficiency given the fragility of interconnected systems.
  • The author advocates for a shift in economic structures to support local production, suggesting that increased taxation on non-renewable resources could finance this transition.
  • A pragmatic approach is recommended for integrating AI into society, with the author endorsing an AI service as a cost-effective alternative to premium offerings.

Knowledge, Wisdom and AI.

My reflections, opinions and beliefs on preparing for the future.

Information to Knowledge.

Informing is telling someone about something, This “telling” is act of passing information.

Gathering information starts at birth with parents, Watching and listening, Interacting and experiencing, Enough information gives us ability to undertake meaningful two-way communication, Sharing and receiving information.

Gathering information helps build worldview, Our personal sum of world experiences, Mind receives new information and associates it with worldview creating understanding and knowledge.

We know fire is hot remember burnt fingers, We have knowledge of fire, Plato defined knowledge as “Justified true belief”.

Knowledge informs action, Action’s usefulness determines value, Value motivating our lifelong pursuit of new knowledge, Helps us nurture next generation.

Wisdom.

I think wisdom is capacity of judging rightly in matters relating to life and conduct.

Accolade of wisdom value judgement bestowed by admirer, “rightly” appellation absolutely depends upon social context.

AI.

Knowledge and wisdom strictly human attributes, Computers have no self-awareness, Total inability to do anything other than run programs manipulating information encoded as data, Humans designed them, Made them, Programmed them and interpret results.

AI has misleading name and has never achieved its goal of simulating intelligence, During years of research useful tools Machine Learning and Deep learning developed, Algorithmic processes for detecting and predicting patterns.

AI has no awareness and no intelligence, AI merely manipulates data representing information, Useful tools for human convenience.

Humans in their wisdom apply hard won knowledge to develop AI applications, AI’s results interpreted by knowledgeable humans.

Very hard to understand let alone validate complex AI processes and outputs, Vacuum due to lack of explanation filled by hype and misinformation.

Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Term popularised in 2016, Represents coalescing of technologies ranging from artificial intelligence gene editing to advanced robotics, Blurring boundaries between physical digital and biological worlds.

Everything is speeding up, Making us more dependent on huge rapidly evolving machine frameworks, Heavy consumers of finite non-renewable resources, Frameworks have demonstrated frailty to supply chain interruptions caused by pandemics and now extreme weather events, Wildfires and floods.

Way Forward.

It all sounds doom and gloom, But I believe there is way forward, Simplify supply network and move to local production of “must-have” survival items, Change financed through increasingly heavy taxation on non-renewable products services and resources.

Blessed be.
