The protests for Black Lives Matter are ongoing and it’s inspiring to see real action happening. This movement has taken life in different forms of activism, including online. But in a little over a week since blackout Tuesday, I’ve seen too many fall into old habits on social media. Beach pictures are going back and in my opinion, it feels a little insensitive. Yet, this conversation goes deeper than optics on social media.

With a sea of information emerging every day we need to understand that, “knowing” isn’t enough. We need to use the information we have to not just educate ourselves but to also be active, “anti” to racism, misinformation, and ignorance. Digesting knowledge doesn’t make you infallible from still making a misstep.

With only a few taps I can tap into today’s headlines and circulate news with thousands of people. I also do more than just share content, I can also create. I’m not saying we should flood social media with our own posts talking about our experiences, opinions, and insights. Again, using the knowledge I have at this moment I know this is the time to listen to Black voices and Black creators. However, putting an embargo on my voice isn’t the answer.

This moment in history is complicated. It’s like walking on the glass trying to know what may be insensitive and what is okay. And that’s the point and that’s the reason I’m writing this post. I know that there is no perfect answer to the question of, “When can I post beach pictures again?” But what I do know is that if all you did was maybe share a post or a black square and then stayed radio silent then you are failing with the knowledge you have.

Learning the names and stories that have been silenced and finding ways of really elevating them is imperative. Urge your friends to hold off on their beach pictures for a week even.
