Know What You Crave: A Lesson from a Dessert Stall Mishap

Craft your life like you would order your dessert

I recalled a dark-humour moment at a dessert stall in Thailand. A customer in front of me enthusiastically pointed at the dessert ingredients, saying, “This, This, This, This.” As the seller promptly placed each indicated happiness-inducing ingredient into a bowl, the customer completed her sentence, “These are what I don’t want.”

Who on earth would order dessert like this!?

This unfashionable way of ordering dug into a small margin the seller could earn as the prepared dessert would have gone to waste. The queuing customers looked at each other in silence. Tension filled the air. Glancing at the seller’s face, I could tell she was far from amused but remained composed. I could only guess what everyone was thinking — What would the seller do?

After a brief pause that felt like an eternity, the seller picked up a new dessert bowl, asked the customer to confirm her preference, and patiently assembled the correct order.

Isn’t the ordering of dessert comparable to crafting the life you love?

When creating the life you love, your own sensational blend of desserts, it is crucial to discern what you do not want and establish healthy conditions for growth. Yet, what is even more important is knowing what you do crave. This knowledge helps you channel your attention, time, energy, and resources effectively.
