What will people say or think is the one thought that most of us are often driven by.

Almost all of us, at some point of time have been steered to not do something or to do something, based on our concern about what others will say or think.

This dependence on others, takes big toll in our growth.

Do we really need approval from others to live our life?

We human beings are social animals and social acceptance and approval is important to us. We can’t deny that.

The real question is at what cost?

In the pursuit of getting approval from others or to please others we forget the self importance, we risk our self dignity and loose control on our life.

If you can’t take care of yourself, you can’t take care of others.

We are often puzzled that taking care of ourselves is selfish. This is not true.

It’s like trying to pour from an empty vessel. We must understand, we can give more when we have more. We can serve others, only if we can take care of ourselves.

One of the basic misconception that we need to get clear off is - taking care of ourselves is not selfish as long as our intentions are clear.

It’s so important to be what you are, even if some people refuse to accept you that way. Remember, you can’t please everyone.

How to overcome dependence on others?

The first part is to know yourself.

We are all born with a purpose and are unique in our own manner. With time we loose our uniqueness as we get shaped by our surroundings and upbringing.

At some point of time we should get to realize that we are not just what we are today. There is something much bigger within each of us. When we realize this, that should be our awakening call. It may be now.

Once you have this realization, it’s time to work on yourself. Look inside and find your purpose.

Knowing yourself is a process, for which you need to ask yourself what really you want from your life. What is it that you love? What makes you excited? What inspires you? What you have been missing? As you start the process, you evolve to understand yourself better and better.

The other part is to accept yourself.

With your awareness of yourself, you need to accept yourself. Your acceptance is linked to your knowing yourself because it’s your perception about yourself. You can accept, only if your perception about yourself is strong and positive.

Therefore, if you find it difficult to accept yourself, you need to work more to know yourself.

The final part is to appreciate yourself.

Along with knowing and accepting, you also need to appreciate yourself.

Once you learn to properly appreciate yourself, you will not seek the approval from others. Your self image will change. You will look at yourself from a different angle.

This process of know, accept and appreciate yourself, is really powerful and once you practice and understand this, then…- You not only become unstoppable but achieve freedom to live your life on your terms and can also impact others in a much effective manner.

Repeat the following affirmations everyday -

  • I’m unique
  • I’m powerful being
  • I choose what I love and right for me
  • I’m driven by my own insight
  • I don’t seek approval
  • I’m confident
  • I’m enough
  • I love myself
  • I also take care of others

Start the process today. Only by taking action you will have realization. Take baby steps that will change your life over a period of time. Be like a child, always ready to learn and grow.
