“You keep saying that the best acts of kindness come from the cruelty and bad intentions of what was done to you. Care to explain?” Grace Linton asked Kerry Longhorn as the audience waited eagerly.
Kerry smiled, shoving the dark clouds of negativity back where it belonged, slowly eased into her past, and said, “I resented my parents who didn’t do much to raise me properly with love and kindness. I resented their cruel actions towards me as a child. But I learned so much about life, living, humans, our world, pain, love, hate, relationships, friendships, discipline, dedication, respect, positivity, negativity, gratitude, and everything else life decides to send my way. I no longer hated them.”
“Wow!” Grace and the entire audience sang like a chorus.
“You are saying that the incompetence and cruelty they raised you with didn’t harm you?” A lady in the audience asked. “How is that possible? Aren’t they our first teachers?”
Smiling wider, Kerry stood up, and eased closer to the edge of the stage, positioning the cordless microphone closer to her mouth. Turned to face the audience of more than two hundred people. Then questioned, sending hearts, minds, and souls back to places many refused to go back to willingly or without a good reason, “How many times did something horrible happen to you that turned out to be the best thing in your life?”
The audience stared at her in shock.
“How many times have your friends deceived you and you still won? How many times have your enemies sought revenge but instead handed you the best gift you could get from a true friend, unaware of what they did?”
“We have been there,” Many in the audience agreed.
“How many times have you been wronged, but end up with the advantage on a platter? How many times did some spiteful actions work in your favor, improving your life?”
Her words refreshed memories and many in the audience began to speak at once.
“One person at a time please,” Grace tried to take back control.
“Been there,” many agreed.
“That’s how I found love,” More said.
“That’s how I got my dream job.”
“That’s how I got a bargain on my house.”
“That’s how I got healed.”
Smiling Kerry continued to enlighten, “Some of the most valuable acts of kindness come with the worst of intentions. Isn’t that a damn good reason to always be kind?”
“Yeah,” a very tall male agreed. “Because like Karma, Kindness never misses an address.”
Everyone laughed and clapped in gratitude.
“Bad intentions do have kindness hidden inside,” Kerry explained. “But it takes a grateful heart and mind to see it. Be grateful for everything life sends your way. Hidden messages are in it. Learn from everything and everyone.”
“Are your parents alive?” someone asked.
“You mean, did I get a chance to thank them and experience closure?”
“Damn, she is gggooooooddd,” someone compliments.
“Yes, I did,” she said fighting to keep the pain from reaching the surface.
“I can sense the pain in your heart right now,” a male voice to the right alerts. “They didn’t think they did anything bad to you.”
Nodding in agreement, still smiling she went on, staring at him, trying to read his emotion through his expression, “Because of my success, strength, positivity, and that I was kinder to them than they were to me, they believed they didn’t do anything wrong.”
“And you accept that for closure?” The same angry voice demanded again.
Sherry nodded, “not everyone will admit that they made a mistake. Especially if their cruel deed made their victims lives better than theirs.”
“But what if you had failed?” A very angry voice demands.
A deep breath escaped before Kerry could stop it, “The hardship I was forced to endure at a young age, my gratitude for life, my ability to think with kindness, along with the lessons life taught me, failure wasn’t an option for me!”
Silence caresses the audience, as her words strengthen hearts. Shared hope. Uplift spirits. Open doors to a better understanding of life and living. Explained tolerance and the value of forgiveness. Show the strength love shares and everything else a heart needs to make our world a better place.
Tears flowed too and she went on, “Kindness comes back to us in many ways. Mine was a gift wrapped in many layers of cruelty and hatred. I used kindness to unwrap that gift and that’s why I am here today. You can too.”
Many acts of kindness come our way; some are wrapped in layers of cruelty. For 2024, use KINDNESS to unwrap everything life sends your way. Find love and kindness wrapped in layers of cruelty!
