Kindness Literally Makes the World Go Around

I am so grateful that I experience it often.

Vidya Sury

Not the best photography, I know! But I will never forget these lovely folks. We were on a trip to Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, back in 2015 and had just visited the Jwalaji temple, one of the 51 shakti temples in the country.

It was 4 pm and well past lunchtime by the time we came out of the temple. We were famished. Almost all the food stalls were closed.

We looked around, wondering what to do when this beautiful lady from a partially closed food stall beckoned to us. She ushered us in and asked us to sit at one of the tables.

Assuring us that it would take just fifteen minutes, she and her son quickly set about preparing a simple but delicious meal for us. Dal (lentils), roti and cauliflower subzi, and yogurt. We were a bit dazed and quite overwhelmed at how loving these strangers were. Our hearts were full with their kindness.

We enjoyed the meal and when we asked them how much, they waved us off with a big smile, refusing to let us pay. I had the presence of mind to remember that the shawl I had bought the previous day was in my bag. I gifted it to the lady, wrapping it around her shoulders. Her eyes filled with tears, and automatically so did mine. We hugged. Thanked them profusely and left.

The divinity of that moment is etched in my heart. The kindness of strangers makes the world go around, does it not?
