Kill The Filibuster, And May The Best Ideas Win!
Our Country Will Thank You… Eventually
One of the arguments Democratic party members make for not killing the ridiculous filibuster rule in the United States Senate is that we must protect the country from wild policy swings that might happen every four years as new administrations take over.
I want to use that logic to make a different argument in favor of killing the filibuster. Suppose you think that Democratic policy positions are better for the American people and would result in better outcomes for all Americans. In that case, you should be for killing the filibuster, and here is why.
In 2020, millions of Americans voted for a party with no platform, no positions, no ideas. Why do you think this happened? The current system allows Republicans to sell terrible, even anti-ideas without ever implementing anything. At the same time, they can demand concessions that cripple or reduce the impact of Democratic initiatives across the board. Republicans speak to their base using every imaginable dog whistle, promising their voters that they will punish the “others” while ignoring the genuine concerns of everyday people.
If the US Senate eliminated the filibuster, one of two things will happen. Either Republicans will moderate their positions to reflect what they will actually do in office, because they will no longer have excuses for not doing them, or they will do some of the terrible things they keep talking about and turn the electorate against them for decades. Of course, this will also be true for Democratic party positions. In the end, dog whistles will lose, and the best ideas will win.
Kill the filibuster, and let’s see whose ideas are better for the people. I’m betting that a few years of actual Republican policy implementation will give Democratic party positions a lock on the US government for a generation. Without a doubt, it will act as a brake on ridiculous or empty policy positions.
After each election, the rules of the Senate should give the majority all of the rope…and no excuses!
