Kids Are Going to Become the Breadwinner for the Family

We are deeply familiar with the idea of the post-war American nuclear family, which consists of two parental figures and a number of children. The man of the house would grab their hat and get their kiss from the stay-at-home wife as they went on their way to work a high wage, non-soul-sucking job. Pair that with some swing music and you have every familial conservative’s Leave it to Beaver wet dream.

But times have changed since the 60s. Women pursued higher education and continue to create much-needed representation in the workforce. The molecular breakdown of the nuclear family created several different family structures with blended families, chosen families, extended families, etc.

Parental roles were equalized or even made interchangeable. It didn’t matter who was bringing home the bacon, as long as the house kept its roof and running water.

Besides the family structure, something else was being revolutionized far more dramatically: technology.

Less is Moore

Technology is advancing at an exponential rate and is becoming harder to catch up on. It makes sense why senior citizens have difficulty comprehending our digital culture. It’s all like black magic.

I tell myself that by the time I get to that age, I wouldn’t be that technologically out of touch. That’s not going to happen. It’s going to happen probably by the time I’m 30.

The co-founder of Intel, Gordon E. Moore, devised the idea that the number of transistors in an integrated circuit doubles annually because of innovation from production experience. The idea became known as Moore’s Law and it’s why our phones keep getting slimmer and lighter.

Technological progression is happening fast enough to cause whiplash. Just when you think that you’ve gotten used to the latest thing, it becomes obsolete by sundown.

Since the future is technology-driven, more jobs are going to require a background in high-level digital compatibility. That means that the constituents of a family structure best suited for providing profit for the family is going to be the kids.

The Children Are Our Future

We empathize with kids more often than adults because of their innocent inexperience with life. They don’t have any answers to the complex nature of life which allows them to resort more to creative impulses.

Adults went through everything a kid goes through plus public schooling, full-time jobs, break ups, successes, failures, and come out a bitter and more realistic version of their child self. Kids always went to adults to find answers, but now adults are going to seek answers from their own kids.

Kids these days play around with augmented reality and touch screen video games before they’re even potty trained. The youth of succeeding generations are going to have even more embedded connections with technology while their elders trail behind.

The job market has already begun its swing in that direction. There is a passion-based economy currently present in which anyone can become a YouTube star, Instagram influencer, Twitch streamer, and Soundcloud artist, all at the same time.

Content has become easier to create, and easier to profit from. The average Twitch streamer can make upwards of $5,000 a month with ad revenue contributing an extra $250 for every 100 subscribers. A Fortnite World Champion can earn $3 million from a shared pot of $30 million.

Teach Them Well and Let Them Lead the Way

I think I may be a part of the last generation that sees getting a college degree as the only path to success. You can get a free education just from the internet, which can be a better option than buying overpriced textbooks. There’s an impossible amount of information available at our fingertips, which creates an unbelievable web of opportunities for success.

I’m not saying that parents should be telling their kids “I don’t hear any Call of Duty being played in there! You better not be reading! Get to clout-chasing!”

I’m saying that you shouldn’t prepare your child for the world that you were raised in. Prepare your child for the world that they are currently being raised in.
