AWS is at the top of the Gartner Magic Quadrant in 2020 — again. In fact, they widened the gap between themselves and next closest provider in the past year. Andy Jassy provided some keys to success at the AWS in his AWS re:Invent 2020 keynote.

1. The leadership and will to invent and reinvent.

Leadership has to drive the vision and have the will to make changes.

2. Acknowledgement that you can’t fight gravity.

Accept reality instead of fighting it. Some companies wait too long to change.

3. Talent that’s hungry to invent.

Existing talent may be protecting things they previously created.

4. Solving real customer problems with builders.

Don’t implement technology for technology’s sake — solve real problems with people who can build innovative solutions.

5. Speed

You have to be able to move faster than the competition.

5. Don’t “complexify”

Overly complex solutions will bog down your efforts to innovate.

7. Use the platform with the broadest and deepest set of tools.

8. Pull everything together with aggressive top-down goals

Executive leadership sets and drives goals.

The only thing I ask, as a cloud security professional, is that you don’t throw out security as you strive to achieve innovation and speed.
