Key Factors for Knowing Your Target Audience
You can’t grow without it.
I used to think it was not important to know your audience. But I’ve recently learned that it is. If you don’t educate yourself, you’ll miss a lot.
Anything you start new has a learning curve. That learning curve is there for a reason. Whether it is learning a new platform or learning about your target audience. We need to know what group we are helping.
The example I used to be confused about was a person like Tony Robbins. People of all races, backgrounds, and income levels fill his audience. From the outside, (or uneducated view) it looks like he is catering to everyone. So, in terms of content or target audience, I thought everyone was the audience.
Another example is the commercials on TV. I thought commercials were randomly placed between TV shows. To me, there was no rhyme or reason.
But I was wrong on both counts. Learning about the business and the audience I am targeting is a key factor in success. Not just success, but progress.
For Tony, there is an underlying need for all these people. It’s not obvious when you look at them and look at external factors. For advertisers on TV, they’re looking at specific shows and demographics. They’re strategic in their planning. Advertisers know that a show or a sports game will be on at a certain time and will be watched by many people in a certain demographic.
Without knowing who our audience is, we’re like a blind man driving a car. Yes, the car will move, and we can increase or decrease our speed. But we’re shooting (or driving) in the dark. We don’t know where we’re going or if we’re going to hit anything.
You need to know what distinguishes you from others. It could be providing highly valuable and useful information that is directly related to your topic. Providing content that is engaging and attention-grabbing while still staying true to reality.
You need to know your followers.
- Who are they?
- What do they want to see?
- What problems do they have?
Once you know that, then you can create content based on what they’re looking for. Provide content based on their needs or wants. Answer questions, show an understanding of their problem, solve their problems, or address their wants and needs.
Knowing your audience will help you deliver the content they need and deserve. You will know what their problems are and help solve them.
