Summary

The text describes a woman's exaggerated reaction to the pain of a paper cut, emphasizing the importance of perspective in life's challenges.

Abstract

The narrative begins with a woman experiencing intense pain from a seemingly minor injury, a paper cut. She endures the discomfort, wishing to alert everyone to her suffering, and questions why she wasn't warned about such pain. The climax occurs when she opens her eyes to see the actual size of the wound, realizing it's much smaller than the pain led her to believe. The story concludes by reflecting on how people often overreact to problems until they take a moment to assess the situation accurately.

Opinions

  • The author suggests that our initial emotional responses can sometimes be disproportionate to the actual severity of a situation.
  • There is an implication that physical pain can be so overwhelming that it distorts one's perception of reality.
  • The narrative encourages readers to take a step back and evaluate their problems before reacting, as this can provide a more accurate and often less severe perspective.
  • The text humorously uses the example of a paper cut to illustrate a broader life lesson about maintaining perspective in the face of adversity.

Keeping Life in Perspective

Needs the opening of eyes

It was excruciating.

With each burst of pain, she wanted to scream.

Let everyone know how torturous it felt, the intensity made her want to pass out.

Why didn’t anyone tell her, she would have been more careful, if she had known.

Who would have thought this could hurt so bad.

She gripped on tighter as waves of sharpness throbbed about.

Finally, she opened her eyes to take in the damage.

Her mother had removed the sticky plaster and finished washing the wound. There before her was this ever so tiny paper cut, who would have thought it could hurt so bad.

Sometimes we blow things that happen out of proportion until we stop and take a look at them.
