Summary

The Parade of Hearts in Kansas City is a public art movement featuring 154 heart sculptures designed by local artists, aimed at fostering unity and supporting the community and those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Kansas City's Parade of Hearts is a unique initiative that combines the city's historical symbol of the heart with a public art display to promote unity and support local artists, neighborhoods, and industries impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This movement involves the installation of 154 five-foot-tall fiberglass heart sculptures throughout the city, each designed by a local artist. The project is a collaborative effort by Dimensional Innovations’ CEO, Tucker Trotter, and Charlie Hustle’s owner and CEO, Chase McAnulty, inspired by the global CowParade art project. The hearts are not only a celebration of the city's identity as the Heart of America but also serve as a means to boost local tourism, retail, and service sectors. The hearts will be auctioned in June, with proceeds benefiting organizations such as Alt-Cap, Mid-America Regional Council, University of Kansas Health System, and Visit KC Foundation. The project encourages community engagement through an app that allows people to learn about each heart, donate, and discover local offerings.

Who is behind the idea of the Parade of Hearts?

According to KCUR 89.3’s Unlike the CowParade from 20 years ago, Kansas City is the only place in the world to see these big hearts,

In 1919, railroad workers wore pins to signal their home base as the “heart of America.” In the 1940s, Kansas City Monarchs players in the Negro Leagues wore jerseys with heart patches on the sleeves. Today, Charlie Hustle T-shirts are adorned with the KC heart. (Source.)

A few years ago, Dimensional Innovations’ CEO, Tucker Trotter, and local apparel retailer Charlie Hustle’s owner and CEO, Chase McAnulty, in conversation revisited the worldwide CowParade art project and brainstormed an idea that could belong to Kansas City. Trotter wondered if they could do a heart parade. According to KCUR, Trotter and McAnulty wanted something to bring the Heartland together setting an example for other cities by showing what can be done to join together.
