Kansas City Chiefs Released QB Patrick Mahomes

After signing their MVP, SuperBowl-winning quarterback Patrick Mahomes to half a billion dollars, the Kansas City Chiefs announced today that they’re releasing him.
This startling announcement shocked the NFL world, but football analysts said this was a move long time coming.
The Kansas City Chiefs have a history of trading or releasing all-pro and elite caliber players for two major reasons: either they suffered an injury or didn’t buy into the team’s culture.
- Justin Houston — released in 2018 due to a 2016 ACL injury, plus unwillingness to take a pay cut
- Eric Berry — released in 2018 due to an Achilles injury, plus recovering from his cancer battle
- Marcus Peters — traded in 2018 due to internal dispute
- Kareem Hunt — released in 2018 for not being upfront about his violence like Tyreek Hill
- Dee Ford — traded in 2018 due to a back injury
- Eric Fisher — released in 2021 due to an Achilles injury
Mahomes fits both criteria. The Chiefs organization was questioning Mahome’s attitude. The accolades plus MVP and Super Bowl wins got to his head and annoyed the Chiefs when he negotiated for what he was worth. The Chiefs felt Mahomes should have taken a pay cut as Tom Brady did during his time with the Patriots.
Mahomes’s recent injury also put him on the hot seat. Mahomes suffered a toe injury during the 2021 playoffs, which impacted his postseason stats.

From these stats, Mahomes completed more passes on more attempts, raising his accuracy. However, he regressed in yards, average yards per throw, passing touchdowns, rushing attempts, rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, and average rushing yards. Furthermore, he lost one more game than last year. To add more salt to the wound, Mahomes failed to win the biggest game ever: the Super Bowl.
The Chiefs are concerned that Mahomes will never regain his 2018 MVP form, and are worried that they paid way too much to keep him on the roster. An anonymous Chiefs executive claimed.
“Yes, Mahomes won a Super Bowl in 2019. But that’s not impressive. You’ve seen Tom Brady with 7 Super Bowl Rings.
“If Pat [Mahomes] was as great as he claimed, he would have had 5 championships by now.”
Rather than seeing through the guaranteed 10-year deal, the Chiefs decided to cut their losses and give the keys of the franchise to backup Matt Moore.
We reached out to Mahomes, who said the deal was a big slap to the face. The 4–year veteran expressed his desire to follow the Alex Smith career redemption arc by signing with the Washington Football Team and winning the NFL Comeback Player of the Year 2022.
