Just Learn How To Code Already

Is it worth it to spend all the time, energy and even money (in some cases) to start in this coding journey? You might think, coding is too hard for me, I just don’t know if it will be worth it in the end for me. Which can make you feel overwhelmed. I understand how you might feel.

So, before you give up on the idea of learning how to code, let me share something with you …

I remember when I first learned how to code back as an undergraduate student in college, it was a very rewarding experience when I saw the output of my first program on the screen. It was a simple “Hello World” message in C++, however, it was just the start of a journey in learning how to write code. As time went by, I started to write more complex programs and learn new programming languages. Then, I started to build my own applications.

Sure, there were times I felt frustrated because the code didn’t work, or the concepts were hard to grasp sometimes. However, something that helped me was to focus on the positives. That is, to focus on some of the rewards that learning how to write code was going to bring into my life.

Consequently, through this frustrating and rewarding experience, I spotted various benefits I gained by learning how to code.

Thus, I want to share some of the benefits I experienced in my coding journey, as well as some I researched online, so this way, you can decide if learning how to code is right for you.

Developed my problem-solving skills

When I started learning how to code in my first college course, I started to solve the problems given in our class as part of our assignments. During this time, I had developed a process to solve these problems. First, I analyzed the question and understood what was being asked. Then, I grabbed a piece of paper and started to write a solution using the programming concepts I knew at that moment. As I was writing the solution, I was organizing my thoughts and when necessary, I divided the problem into small parts and started to perform some test cases to see if my solution would work. After organizing my thoughts and having a primary solution in mind, I would proceed to write the code on my computer.

“I improved my problem-solving skills and process”

Hence, as I kept repeating this process I started to notice that my problem-solving ability was getting better each time. The more I practiced these skills, I started to solve problems faster. Now that I look back at it, when analyzing a programming question, it’s a similar process when solving situations in my life. I analyze and strive to understand the problem or a situation on a deeper level, organize my thoughts and execute a solution. So, this was one of the first benefits I noticed in my life as I was learning how to code.

Made tangible products

One of the most satisfying moments in my coding journey was when I built my first application. It was a simple application that allowed the user to press a button, and it would track via a counter how times the button was pressed. It was a very gratifying moment because I could see a tangible result of the time I invested in building that application. In hindsight, it was a simple application, nonetheless, as my coding skills got better, I started to learn new programming languages and technologies that would later enable me to build more complex applications.

“You can build applications by learning how to code”

Not only that but thanks to learning how to code I could start making applications on different devices such as smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and desktops. Thus, if you are interested in building things to solve real-world problems, then I would recommend you start learning how to write code. You can develop software applications that can solve problems in many areas or industries, such as Finance, Retail, Medicine and even Education.

Help Others and Make a Positive Impact

Thanks to the products you can make using computer programs (code), you can publish these applications to platforms on the Internet where people can download them. These places include the iOS AppStore and Google Play Store, among other mediums. The great thing about these platforms is that thousands, even millions of users can have access to your application which can solve that problem for all of the people that download your app. Consequently, making a positive impact on the user’s lives.

“You can help others by the products of your code”

Here’s an interesting article I found with some apps that help people in some way or another, just to give you some examples of how code is used to help others in our society. You may be already using some of these apps. So, if you are looking to make a positive impact in the world and help others by solving a problem, learning how to code can be an alternative for you.

Open up career opportunities for yourself

Thanks to the use of technology in today’s world, the demand of people who know how to code is rising. Many applications that are used in society such as e-commerce websites, social media, and banking applications require code to function. Thus, people who know how to design, develop and maintain these applications are needed.

“You can work in different fields or industries”

Some of the roles you can apply for by learning how to code can be front-end or back-end developer, even mobile and web developer. There are different career paths you can choose from and can work in different industries. Consequently, if you are looking to make a career change or even enhance your professional skill set, learning how to code can be an option for you.

There you have it, some of the benefits I have experienced in my life by learning how to code, as well as some of the different benefits you can experience as well if you decide to learn how to code in the future. I hope this post can help decide if learning how to code is right for you, let me know in the comments section if it did, or share some of the benefits you have experienced if you already learned how to code. This way, we can help others who are still on the verge of deciding if investing the time in learning how to code.
