A tiny Tai tidbit #1

Just do it

Waiting never got anything done

Look at this pile of dirty dishes now! (Photo by Izz R on Unsplash)

Time is a limited resource. How much of it we have is anybody’s guess but you better believe it doesn’t keep on coming like the porridge from that magical self-filling porridge pot in the old fairy tale. When it’s done, it’s done, so why waste what we have?

I’ve never understood why anybody would want to make any more work for themselves than is absolutely necessary. Every precious moment counts, doesn’t it? So why waste it? If you’re going to have to do a thing anyway, why not just get the damn thing done now.

I’m talking about the small things because small things add up to become big things and you’ll figure out soon enough exactly what I mean.

You’ve had a nice ole cup o’ joe while you’re working and, with the last sip, your empty cup is in your hand. You now have two choices: put it down where you stand or walk the ten paces to the kitchen, run it under the tap, and set it in the drainer, clean and ready for your next caffeine hit. If you choose the latter, it’s done and dusted, story over. However, if you choose the former, your work has only just begun.

The drama of the abandoned cup

You could have avoided this, if you’d just taken those few seconds to put it away to begin with but, no, that was WAY too much effort and you put it down and carried on with other things. Later, you want that cup of joe but. . . where the hell did you leave that cup? Now you’re hunting for it, precious seconds and then minutes ticking away. The gremlins took it. You have no idea where you were when you put it down so. . . you’ll find it later and use another cup.

Only to repeat the same process.

By the end of the day, you’re down five cups and there’s no cups left. You’re going to have to find those missing cups. One hour, a torrent of curses, and two stubbed toes later, you’ve finally managed to retrace your steps and you’re now trying to scrub the stains out of the thankfully rediscovered cups. Altogether, those five cups cost you minutes out of your day, your life, that you’ll never get back.

Its not just the cups

If it’s the cups, it’s everything. The side plate on which you had your lunch, the hammer you used out on the deck, the screwdriver you used to tighten the back door handle, your slippers from which you changed into your work boots. . . and the list goes on. Everything you’ve had in your hand all day, you’ve put down exactly where you were when you stopped using it, and now you have to go back and try to find it when you need it again.

Here’s a thought: instead of putting it down right there, put it away right now. Take those few steps, those few seconds, and just do it. Trust me. You’ll thank yourself for it later.

Inspired by actual events, though not necessarily my own.
