Just A Slight Detour
Thank you, Lucille Clifton
the time i rested in bed 4 three weeks under doctor’s orders eager to confirm you were on your way was the day you floated away from me, flushed out to sea, but not without a quick peek to seek what answers I could seek from your minuteness — dot of pink with a long tail,
the cord that bound you to me, suddenly set free such that you were not to be…you would have come in early summer’s sun, had you stayed put and/or i knew how to hold on, and/or my ambivalent uterus wanted to hold on. who knows? maybe my heart beat out an S-O-S warning in some sort of secret somatic Morse Code,
and it said, get out while the getting is good. she’s not ready for motherhood. her restless soul has taken hold and runs the show. no, baby, fly over this house and come down again to rest in one with eager arms and waiting nest. this is not the end, just a slight detour in your nascent journey —
one well worth taking.
