Writer Focus Compilation
June Week Three, Best of New Illumination Writers
A compilation of articles featuring writers new to Illumination

At the beginning of June, I began to use Dr Mehmet Yildiz‘s list of new writers to pull articles that appealed to me and highlighting a few of them each day. My goal was to get a little more exposure for writers that are new to Illumination for sure, and many are new to Medium as well.
My bias for selecting articles oriented around writers that had less than 200 followers, and I wanted to stay away from exceptionally polarizing topics and those topics that are found in abundance all over Medium.
That meant writing generally was off the table as a topic, as was anything about Medium. I also tend to avoid Coronavirus and racial and political related articles. Those are great topics, and I have interest and opinion about them, but I wanted the features to be more about the writers themselves and their skills, and less about how cogently they argued current event topics.
So, I tend for the eclectic, and anything that is new or informative to me. Plus, as many know, anything about animals tends to catch my eye, as well as a quirky story with an upbeat narrative.
Here is the last week’s list of articles that jumped off the page at me and begged for some additional attention:
June 17 — Today featured a really great story about a dairy farm, along with some tips to get you out of your parents’ house and talks about Cargo Cult Culture:
June 18 — Things got a little wonky today. The story that I had auto-scheduled to come out on Saturday June 20 accidentally posted today, just hours after the correct story posted. This was due to a Medium glitch that affected a few other people as well. So, the story that was the correct one for today is here and it is a great one because it includes edible bugs!
Then, before you have even finished your ant omelet, all the sudden it was time to grab your electric scooter and learn how to make a tasty and crunchy salad!
June 19 — We got back on track on Friday, for the most part. The theme for this Friday was quitting. Like, as in, Medium will you please quit screwing up the story scheduling function?
June 20 — Saturday had me eating a little crow, but ironically the auto-schedule feature worked perfectly for my apology article, which really just points everyone back to the mixed up Saturday and Friday articles. However, it is as elegant as I could muster in light of the situation, so give it a read anyway!
Then remember that you were supposed to be reading this article. Go ahead now, if you didn’t read it above, get to it now!
June 21 — With everything all straightened out we deal with a bit of humorous cooking and a great view in Peru. Loving that llama picture!
June 22 — Kind of a day late for Father’s Day is a great story about one writer’s father, plus a cute story about a snail and a strawberry, with a cool illustration by the author:
June 23 — And finally we get some more insight on how our animals are domesticating us, the lack of passivity in “passive income” and a “did that really happen?” story about Google:
And there you go. That is the rundown for June, week three — only one more week to go! Hopefully curating all these together in one place will make for easier reading for anyone that missed a day or two!
It has been really fun getting to know all the great new writers and taking a peek into their writing portfolios. There is some really good stuff out there!
