July Writing Prompt: Ancient Cultures
Write a fictional story in a historical setting

With blazing summer heat and vacations to sandy shores, I’ve been imagining what life would be like in ancient Egypt. This month, let’s do something unique and mix in a little history with fantasy. July’s writing prompt is: Ancient Cultures.
Pick a long-lost culture, create a character, and write a flash fiction story in that setting. It could be ancient Rome, Egypt, Feudal Japan, Greece, the Ming Dynasty, or an obscure culture that only occupies a single page in the history books. The only rule is, must be a fictional story set in a HISTORICAL culture.
If you need some ideas about what life was like in an ancient civilization, you can find some interesting archaeological discoveries and cultural insights here and here. Be sure to list the name of the culture which inspired you at the bottom of your story. And remember — all stories must adhere to the submission guidelines.
Also, congratulations to Alex Kilcannon, Denise Shelton, and Cyn Taylor for winning the first ever Fantasy Shorts writing prompt contest! You can check out their stories below, which will be featured on the Women Warlocks section of the Fantasy Shorts homepage for the month of July.
Happy writing! I can’t wait to read what you create.
