Joyful Home: How to Create More Intuitive, Peaceful Spaces
The more you remove the unnecessary, the more space you have for the necessary.

Our environment profoundly impacts our state of being. A cluttered desk becomes a cluttered mind. Through being intentional and practicing minimalism, we create relaxing and authentic spaces to be our fullest selves.
The more you remove the unnecessary, the more space you have for the necessary.
Gaining clarity on what matters most changes everything. Starting with our physical space ripples into other areas of our lives, i.e., digital space, time, and life direction. Years of exploration and application have helped me to appreciate the power of these mindsets.
Our world has become noisy and cluttered with buzzing notifications and gripping marketing messages. Being intentional and practicing minimalist provides a path for more authentic, fulfilling living.
Here are a few mindsets that I have gleaned from personal experience and years of simplicity research:
1.Be Intentional: When we start with the end in mind and visualize our wildest dreams, we move towards joy with fewer distractions. Consider:
- What do I want to do in this space?
- How do I want to feel in this space?
- Who do I want to be in this space?
2. Practice Minimalism: Through letting go of consumerism, we give ourselves more time, creativity, and space for what matters. Consider:
- Decluttering
- Choosing Versatility
- Being Present
I encourage you to explore the many inspiring influencers such as Marie Kondo, Matt D’Avella, and Joshua Becker, author of Becoming Minimalist. They provide many tools, rules, and techniques to help in your journey.
Be Intentional
Starting with a vision helps us to create a more intentional and intuitive living space. I redesigned shared living spaces with housemates, and I found getting clear about our hopes and dreams made the process much smoother.
“Intentional living is the art of making our own choices before others’ choices make us,” said Richie Norton
- What do I want to do in this space? Is this a social space or a solitary space? Will we need more places to sit, or is it more of an active space? Working with the furniture first gives you some quick wins and new ideas.
- How do I want to feel in this space? Do we want a more bright and energetic space? Or something calm and peaceful? You could move brighter, more colorful art into one area for a more lively space and put more plants and soothing colors into a calmer space.
- Who do I want to be in this space? Are we young artists who prioritize creative work? Are we a young family who prioritize our familial roles? Taking into account your life stages and priorities helps you to make your space more intentional and intuitive.

Practice Minimalism
Clear out the unhelpful items and let the beautiful, purposeful ones shine. Give everything a home, and honor items as part of our souls.
“Minimalism is not about having less. It’s about making room for more of what matters.”
- Decluttering: I recommend starting with either one room or one category of items, i.e., cleaning supplies, clothes, kitchen tools. As you throw out or repurpose expired, random or redundant items, you will likely find beautiful pieces that you had long forgotten.
- Choosing Versatility: Does this item bring joy? Does it serve a purpose? Does it have multiple uses? This mindset sets a higher bar for the items we choose to bring and keep in our homes.
- Being Present: Let go of “what if” or “just in case” and be with what is. Did you start a hobby that you have not engaged in within years? Do you keep a special tool for the rare occasion when it might be useful? If you have not used something in the last six months, you are likely causing yourself more psychological harm than good. If you can easily replace that rarely used item for less than $20, toss it.
Letting go is an art. Letting go of possessions feels like losing weight. The practice brings tangible mental ease and peaceful feelings. Start with the easy items and be gentle with yourself.
