Journey of Personal Discovery – Part 1
Start with where you are
I have been reflecting in the past few months on who I am and the journey I have been on in life. It has been a journey of personal discovery, not just in the past few months or years, but in the nearly 49 years of my existence. I wanted to share not just the journey but also how I approached the journey. Why? In sharing this, I hope others may find ways to embark on such a journey or comment and assist me as the journey continues to unfold.
How do you begin to understand yourself? If you google this then you will find many different answers I am sure. I offer a short reflection on how I have used certain tools and techniques in the past to aid my self-discovery and recovery.
Grounding yourself in the here and now, understanding what is going on around you, being “in the moment”, for me, is the place to start. I know some will “go off” to find themselves, though I have always thought that this approach was at the detriment of who you are with at the present moment like they will just put their whole lives on hold till you return. Why would they do that? Why should they do that? Is it not true also that some people can’t go off and find themselves? If you have young children, for example, you can’t just leave them and come back later. The same is true if you are a caregiver. Don’t let those things though stop you from finding yourself. You are just starting from a different point.
So who are you right now? Get a book, a journal, and take some brief notes, draw a picture. You will even find apps that can help you now. Be brief, reflective. How do you see yourself? Be honest here, as honest as you can be right now. Are you a happy person, an angry person? Someone who is living life to the full as you see it or someone who, inside, is unhappy but appears happy to the outside world. We all have different personas. Be aware of them. Note them down. Take your time on this and remember you may find different layers to this, that you are different in different situations. Don’t try and understand why at this stage, just be present to yourself and start with where you are.
This is the start of an amazing journey for you so give yourself the time to do this. However long you take in this phase is totally governed by yourself. Set no time limits or expectations, just enjoying recognizing you in different situations. You can always keep coming back to this, too add or revise what you wrote.
Time and space are yours. Give yourself permission to have those things for yourself.
