Johnny Depp Knows Who I Am

This is not an Amber Alert but a true tale not preserved in amber, having taken place just prior to the Amber Age.
I opened an email from Ted.
“Elizabeth, I am writing you just in case you know of anyone who can help. My niece is not doing well. This is an extreme situation. She is the biggest Johnny Depp fan on the planet. A picture, autograph, anything would totally light her up.”
We spoke. My friend’s college-age niece Theresa was dying from an inoperable brain tumor. A most devastating disease with a dismal record for survival had struck this young Long Island athlete.
I had never met Johnny Depp; I had never even seen him in person although we were then neighbors on the Sunset Strip. Did we ever enter the same supermarkets, restaurants, theatres, or liquor stores? Did he even visit such venues?
I did know someone who was friendly with Suzanne Allison, an excellent L.A. headshot photographer. Suzanne had photographed Depp. But better than that, Suzanne’s sister, Lori, a make-up artist, had been his first wife. They had married when Johnny Depp, then a guitarist, was just 20 years old and the couple divorced a couple of years thereafter. The two had remained friends; there was no rancor, no accusations of abuse.
Like a game of telephone, the message concerning the dying young woman traveled to the movie star: from Ted to me to an actress I know to the photographer to her sister and finally to Johnny Depp. Somehow, the missive arrived intact, rapidly, and not transformed by faulty transmission.
There was a dying girl who desired a signed photograph from the actor.
A few days later, a Fedex package arrived at a suburban Long Island home. It contained Johnny Depp’s autographed photo, but also a personal note from him, a fluffy stuffed animal, and some other charming trinkets.
Two months after the package was delivered, Ted’s niece died. Prior to her passing, Theresa had written a speech to be read at her funeral. She said she didn’t want her family and friends to suffer. She said that although her time on earth had been short, there had been many joys and adventures including winning gold at statewide high school track meets, working as a camp counselor, and partaking of numerous family trips to Disney World. Her last line was: “And Johnny Depp knows who I am.”
