Joel Embiid Trolls His Own Fans
Joel Embiid broke the internet (in Philadelphia and the greater Philadelphia area) today with his comments about wanting to win a championship.
“I don’t know where that’s [winning a championship] gonna be, whether it’s in Philly or anywhere else, I just want to have a chance to accomplish that. I want to see what it feels like to win that first one, and then you can think about the next one. It’s not easy, but it takes more than one or two, three guys. You got to have good people around you, and myself, every single day, I work hard to be at that level so I can make it happen. So, every single day, I’m working towards that.”
Fret not Sixers fans … Embiid wasn’t being serious. He was just trolling.
At least that’s what he claims.
I caught wind of Embiid’s first comment while boarding my layover flight at the airport. It wasn’t until I landed that I saw his tweet claiming that this was all one big ruse. So for three hours, I sat in between a pregnant woman and a larger than life senior citizen, and planned exactly how I was going to burn every last piece of Sixers gear I owned. Because a Sixers team without Embiid isn’t a Sixers team at all.
But then I saw that it was all a big jokey joke, and was immediately filled with joy and relief.
But let’s say this wasn’t a joke. Let’s say Embiid’s comments were said with full sincerity. If that was the case, which it’s not, I would be forced to address Embiid’s lackluster playoff performance year after year. I’d have to talk about the fact that no matter how many superstars Daryl Morey molds together, Embiid’s dominant regular season stat lines dissipate quicker than morning dew in Death Valley.
I’d probably say something like “maybe if you got right back to training after being knocked out from the playoffs in the second round every season, the Sixers would already have a championship banner hanging in Wells Fargo Arena. It doesn’t matter where you go, you will NEVER win a championship unless you change the way you play the game”.
But since it was all one big joke, I guess I’ll save those comments for another day.
