Jesus Weeps for America

A reflection on mass shootings in America

Jesus weeps for you, America. His tears fall, one for every bullet and gun you sell for no good reason. He shudders that His love has been warped and twisted and allowed to be the foundation for terrible violence. “Let the little children come to me,” He said. Why must you let that be taken so literally?

Pour out your grief by melting your idols, smelt your guns in a fire of righteous rage, and find redemption from this Age of the Rifle.

Let the melted metal be used to make playgrounds, filled with swings and seesaws and monkey bars. Let the instruments of Death become springs of life.

Put your hands up in prayer, and cry out to God for forgiveness. May one of Christ’s tears land on you. In that moment of baptism, may you hear the deep well of grief in His heart, and may your heart be broken too.

Jesus weeps for you, America. Let not His tears fall in vain.
