Write about your most memorable travel experience in Japan

Japan is among the top travel destinations in the world. From the breathtakingly beautiful city of Kyoto, to endless varieties of food in Osaka, the powder-snow slopes of Niseko, and the iconic sight of Mount Fuji, there is something for every traveler in Japan!
While Japan has been closed to tourists throughout the pandemic, the country may start to reopen from June.
In this spirit, we’re launching our first ever Japonica Writing Contest! Tell us your best travel experience in Japan. Help our readers discover the hidden gems and underrated spots to help them plan their next vacation.
Submission Window
- Deadline: Stories must be submitted by 10 June 2022.
- Stories will be published as they are accepted.
- Winners will be announced by 30 June 2022.
Awards and Judging Criteria
Awards: Gold, Silver, and Reader’s Choice.

- Guest judge Donny Kimball of A Different Side of Japan! Donny Kimball is a digital marketer using his blog and social media to put Japan’s hidden gems on the radar of overseas visitors. Donny has also been using his e-commerce background to help Japan’s talented craftsmen find success and sales online.

Participation Rules
1. Create a Medium account if you don’t already have one.
2. Follow Japonica
Please follow Japonica on Medium if you’re not already doing so.
3. Submit an unpublished, original draft
We will accept only Medium drafts for this contest. The story must be original and not published elsewhere, including in magazines or blogs.
At the beginning of the story, please add: This piece was submitted as an entry to Japonica’s Writing Contest.
4. Length
Maximum length is 2000 words. However, most articles on Medium are 800–1500 words and those generally work best on the platform.
5. Language
For this contest, all submissions must be written primarily in English, but feel free to include Japanese words and phrases.
6. Tags
You must add the following tags to the submission in order for the article to show up on our travel page.

7. Follow Japonica Image Policy
Submissions must comply with Japonica’s Image Policy. You can use copyright-free images, but submissions with relevant, original photographs will have a higher impact.
8. Formatting Guide
The quality of your submissions will be judged based on storytelling, originality, and creativity, and not formatting. However, articles that do not meet Medium’s and Japonica’s formatting guidelines cannot be accepted. Please review Japonica’s optimization guidelines.
9. Communication
Please enable Medium’s “private notes” function so editors can communicate with you.

To submit, you need to be added as a writer for Japonica. If you’re not already a Japonica writer, please write “I want to be added as a writer for Japonica” in the comments below so we can add you.
