Robot That Wins Rock Paper Scissors with a 100% Success Rate

So it cheats?

Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and sometimes you draw — unless you’re playing against Janken, the rock-paper-scissors robot developed by University of Tokyo’s Ishikawa Group Laboratory.

The developers of the robot claims it hasn’t lost a single round since it was developed in 2013. Yeah right, it was there for over 10 years and I am seeing it for the first time now.

How it works? Does it cheat?

The robotic hand use high-speed vision system to identify real quick whether the human hand formed a rock, paper, or scissors shape. It would then quickly mimic a winning hand. Although we couldn’t notice it, there was a slight delay of about 20 milliseconds between the human hand’s final shape and the robot hand’s response.

Basically, if you want to win this robot you need a read good eyes and a better reaction time under 20 milliseconds. But is it possible for you? Nah, I don’t think so!

The inclusion of these technologies additionally enables the system to dynamically track the human hand and recognize its shape in high speed, regardless of where it moves, as well as improves the synchronization between the motion of the robot hand and that of the human hand,” the researchers said.

The research isn’t just for entertainment; it has practical applications too. Scientists propose that this technology could be used for more serious tasks, like enabling humans and robots to work together collaboratively and cooperatively.

Now, here is the fun section of the story.

Redditors take on this rock-paper-scissors robot:

Most redditors was saying its cheating as the reaction time is way less for robots compared to human.
