January Writing Contest & Prompt: Starting Over
One cash prize and several superlative title recipients—all for fun!

Happy New Year!
To kick off 2022, we thought it would be fun to combine our January writing prompt with a small contest. If we collectively have fun and it’s a success, I’m sure we will do more and perhaps up the prize money ante as well.
This Month’s Prompt Will Be: “Starting Over”
Stories should be about new beginnings/a fresh start/starting over. Can be good, bad, anywhere in between. Funny, sad—and again—anywhere in between. Whatever it means/meant to you from the narrative of your life.
Contest Eligibility:
- You must be a writer for The Memoirist
- You must be following The Memoirist
- Winner must be a Medium subscriber (non-subscribers may use the prompt, however)
- Submissions must be published through the publication only
- You may submit as many stories as you like (as we usually do for our prompts); please do not submit more than one per day
- Tag: “Starting Over”
- Only memoir-style will be considered
- Only one part stories considered for the contest, no more than 8 minutes in reading time length
- Only one winner will be chosen for the cash prize
- We may announce non-cash superlative titles for other recipients (for example: “Gaurav Jain was voted Funniest Story for ‘I Flew to Paris and All I Got Was This Lousy T-Shirt.”)
- Editorial team will make final vote on February 1, 2022
- In addition to content, voting may also take into account: audience response, stats, fellow Memoirist response
- Editors are not eligible for the contest (but can still submit stories)
Award: $50.00 via PayPal, Venmo, or Ko-Fi (depends on location). Award money is being provided by KiKi Walter.
Winner will be announced between the 1st and 2nd week of February.
We are now open to contest/prompt submissions. We’re looking forward to reading all the great stories sure to come out of this prompt! If you have any questions, please leave a comment. Thanks!
