Jack Robinson’s Statue Stolen, Except The Feet
The Sad Reminder That Racism Still Exists
In the early morning of Friday, 26 January 2024, residents of a local Kanas city, Wichita, woke up to find something horrific had happened. When locals came by a public park, only to find that the famous Jack Robinson statue had been stolen. Or, as some would describe it, vandalized, with only the feet left intact.
According to the police, video footage was released to them, and they were able to confirm two people walked off with the rest of the statue in the early hours of Friday.
The two suspects haven’t been found and the police is still largely at search not only for the criminals, but also the statue that they had stolen.
Why all the ruckus about a stolen statue? It’s not just about the statue itself. It’s about what it represents — the first African American person, or person of color, to be allowed to play in the Major Leagues as a professional baseball player (at least, in modern times).
Jackie Robinson was born on the 31st of January, 1919. In the year 1947, he was the first baseball player of color to join the Major League. This made Robinson an icon, and also marked a really important time in black history.
Robinson’s story has motivated the next generations to pursue their dreams in sport, and removed one of the biggest barriers that African Americans faced when they wanted to take this kind of direction with their careers.
The local community of Wichita is currently outraged by this theft. Many think of it as an important reminder that, even though we’ve come a very long way, racism is still among us — it’s something that we, the black community, still deal with in the modern day.
But, there’s something that makes this entire situation even worse. You see, we’re actually preparing to enter Black History month — in fact, we’re just days away from the 1st of February.
So, to make matters worse, a statue of an iconic hero in the black community was stolen a week before we’ll be entering Black History Month — a time of the year that’s really important for people of color.
Right now, there aren’t any news about the whereabouts of the statue, and the feet still remains in place at the local park — a park where we’re supposed to learn about black history, including the role that Robinson in helping black children find a fair chance to play baseball and other sports in the modern day.
The local police have offered rewards for tips that could lead to an arrest. If someone can help the police uncover the stolen statue, they offer up to $5,000 in the form of a reward.
I’d love to get your opinion on this. Do you think people are overreacting, or are you with us on the fact that it’s a violation of black culture — and not a coincidence that this happened so close to Black History Month?
