I’ve suddenly developed an intensified love of dried seaweed, so I bought a bag of eight large individually wrapped packets from Costco.
Naively I munched, thinking that the seaweed was good for me; however, I was aware it was very salty.
Yesterday, I googled the benefits of seaweed and learned,
“Seaweed is an excellent source of iodine, a vital trace mineral that plays a critical role in thyroid health. The body doesn’t make iodine on its own, so you need to get it from food sources or supplements.” Source.
This sounded promising, but the article also heeded a warning that some varieties contain heavy metals like arsenic.
Yikes!
I stopped binge eating the seaweed but have banked the alert for future reference.
Who knows?
One of my fictional characters may commit a crime one day, and the coroner will rule the poisoning — death by seaweed.
