Abstract

The author expresses delight in earning their Medium membership, which they've achieved through their writing on the platform. They humorously note that their earnings also afford them the luxury of buying cat food for their clever and industrious pets. The writer has developed a routine that includes writing after a power nap, which they prefer over early morning writing sessions. They mention a growing addiction to writing, with ideas flowing more freely the more they engage in the practice. The author uses their phone to quickly capture ideas and later develops them into articles on their laptop. Inspired by an article about minimalism by Megan Holstein, they maintain a focused workspace with just a laptop, printer, and a few personal items, including a dictionary and a plant, which symbolize their past and the growth of new ideas. While they haven't yet experienced curation, they are content with the reads they receive and are motivated by the supportive Medium community. The author has committed to writing nearly every day and has even ventured into poetry, finding equal joy in reading and learning from other writers on Medium.

I've Earned My Medium Membership

And A Tin Of Cat Food

Yep, that's me and I am beyond delighted. Membership paid for with my Medium earnings and that damned Ginger Tom will eat tonight. Well, he eats every night actually. To be fair he eats all day and all night and being the clever cat he is can roll his tins towards his dish or even open the sachet himself. Somewhat worryingly he can even open the sachet box. The old Black Cat being the wise old sage lets him do all the work and she’s standing by, ready to tuck in.

Anyway. I digress. This is a learning experience and I’m addicted. I am getting in the habit of writing every day at whatever time is best. Finding my own way round like an elderly snail. I’ve tried the writing early in the morning but currently, I’m finding things better after an afternoon power nap. I’d add that I am not ninety, I am fifty-two and even fifty-two-year-olds like an afternoon nap!!

What’s even stranger is that the more you write, the more you want to write and the more ideas you have. I catch those ideas as quickly as I can. I’ve got the app on my phone and very quickly jot the title and subtitle down so I don’t forget it. I then work on the article on the laptop.

I read an article on here the other day that really struck me. It was called “What My Minimalist Laptop Looks Like by Megan Holstein. Megan uses her laptop only for working purposes. That is what I am doing with mine. It hones and concentrates the mind and you can sit there quite happily tapping away whilst hopefully it is quiet around you.

Apart from the laptop and printer, two things lurk on my desk. A book of words “The Concise Oxford Dictionary” bought for me decades ago by my beloved Aunt and Uncle. I never look at it but for some unknown reason, I love having it there. A bit of my past that sits propped up in my present.

I also like a bit of life on the desk. I’ve bought a leafy green pot plant. That sits on the other side of the desk. New leaves come and I view them as new ideas starting as small shoots.

And what of this thing called Curation. I don’t think I’ve been Curated yet but no matter. I’m getting reads which is to me what counts. Somebody somewhere is reading the words that come tumbling out of my head. That may come at some time or it may not, but no matter. I’m continuing on. And dear God in Heaven I’m even writing poetry!!

There is a great encouraging community here. All striving for one thing. Writing. But it’s also making me do something else a whole lot more and that is reading. So much to learn and take in, some great writers reside within the Medium Universe.

So yeah, I really went for it this month and wrote. Nearly. Every. Single. Day. And who knows maybe that old Tom Cat will get two tins next month.

Happy Writing.

And Reading.
