I’ve Earned a $50 Monthly Bonus Again from Medium
I’m surprised and super appreciative. Here are some thoughts about my May and June earnings.

I earned a $50 bonus in May’s monthly payment, on top of my regular article earnings! I admit it felt super validating to get the email notification from Medium that stated I was in the top 2,000 writers on their platform.
The email looked like this:

Though I haven’t received an official email yet, I noticed today within my Medium account that I have received another $50 bonus payment, on top of my regular earnings, for June:

Some Thoughts I Have About May and June 2021
I started writing articles and poems in January, not expecting to make any money. One article I wrote received a lot of views and reads that month. I didn’t earn much, and then the views and reads died down. A few months went by, I got busy with teaching at my community college, and I didn’t produce any articles, really.
Then in April, I noticed my earnings shot up for the month. I logged into Medium and realized that the article about my husband’s early retirement had somehow gone “baby viral”, which means it suddenly received thousands of reads and views. By May, the article was still receiving a steady stream of reads and views. No one was reading my poems, sadly enough, but that was okay.
Here’s the weird part. When I got the $50 bonus for May, I hadn’t published a single article that whole month.
Every writer on Medium will say that consistency is key. Writing quality pieces will do well here. Include personal experience. Bring value to your audience. Try to solve their problems somehow through your insights and experience and research. Make your headlines and sub-headlines catchy — but not too clickbait-y, or worse, inaccurate.
But what about this strange anomaly of not writing or publishing a single article all month and still qualifying for the monthly bonus? Is all it takes is one article to go somewhat viral — and you’re in the “top 2,000 writers” club?
Medium says there will be bonuses for July, too.
I’ve been sensing a more competitive spirit from regular writers on this platform since the monthly bonuses started in April. I kind of like it, but only because we’re all super driven now and focusing on producing our best writing.
I don’t have all the answers, but all I know is: write what you care about, and yes, produce quality work often.
I was so motivated by the bonus from May that as soon as I submitted my students’ end-of-semester grades in early June, I began producing a lot more finance-related articles (and one parenthood piece), all roughly in the 5–7 minute reading length range. Each of these articles earned me a little money, but nowhere close as the one “baby viral” article I wrote back in January. It’s still my highest earning piece each month! I’m surprised by this, and I’m sort of wondering if I can ever top that piece. I hope so. I have a lot more articles on various subjects I’m working on and can’t wait to publish!
In sum, whether you write many pieces over the course of the month (like I did in June), or none (like for me in May), it’s hard to really say what the formula is to be in the “Partner Program Bonus” group. I know it definitely helps to add your pieces to publications within Medium because the writing can get distributed more widely to readers.
I’m not after the money on this platform; I honestly write for fun when I can and hope my advice within the articles is valuable and inspiring to readers.
I definitely look forward to crafting more pieces and reading everyone else’s work! Thank you, Medium, for the bonus and for creating a writing community where we can all support one another.
