It’s Time to Stop Trafficking the Earth
Uranus retrograde is calling for a revolution of the resource extraction industry.
From August 15th through January 10th the planet Uranus will be retrograde in the sign of Taurus. Let’s explore the themes associated with this transit and how it connects to current events, specifically Indigenous land defenders in Canada.
The Planets Are Not Doing Anything to Us
Astrology is not fortune-telling or predicting the future. The zodiac is a map of the sky, and the celestial bodies are forever cycling through it. We can observe these patterns and draw connections between what’s currently unfolding and what has occurred in the past.
Instead of minimizing astrology to newspaper horoscopes and love lives, it’s a tool that can help us to zoom out and observe larger themes at play. It can also be a means of tuning in to better understand how our individual actions and choices play into that bigger picture. By looking at where the planets are now, where they are heading and where they have been; we gain some context.
It’s Like a Weather Forecast
If we know it’s raining, then we can choose to dress accordingly. If we know some of the cosmic cycles at play, then we can navigate the ethers in an informed way.
There are archetypes, themes and characteristics for each of the planets and each of the signs. We’ll explore the significance of Uranus and the sign it is transiting, Taurus. Then we will outline why this is relevant to our current economy and offer a glance at where we are collectively heading.
Uranus is the planet of revolution, innovation and change.
When we have a dose of this energy it means that things are being shaken up. It’s not for the faint of heart and it cannot be ignored. It’s the mover and shaker. It’s the rebel. And it’s going to illuminate and blast a signal; even if certain people would rather that message be ignored.
Taurus Is Connected to the Earth
It’s the planet’s natural abundance and intelligence. When we witness the perfection of nature, we are connecting to Taurus energy.
Earth is the definition of wealth. It’s constantly growing, nourishing and sharing with it’s inhabitants. There’s a seemingly endless supply of her gifts. But when we have an economy that is fuelled by greed and corruption, even her bounty will run dry.
When Pluto was in Taurus, the US Congress passed the 1871 Indian Appropriation Act, which ended the US government’s practise of seeing Indigenous lands as separate countries. In 1876, Canada passed the Indian Act, allowing the government to control most aspects of Indigenous people’s lives and this continues today.

Uranus will be in Taurus from 2018 until 2026 and during these years we can piece together the themes from above. Revolution and Earth’s perfection. In a sense we can imagine that this theme is tearing up the cement and replacing it with soil. The planet is offering itself as a home; not as a commodity to steal and distribute for our own gains.
Our current economy is set up to take, take, and take some more.
We extract resources, steal land from indigenous peoples, repeat, and do it again. Everything is in the name of supply and demand. The goal is to drive profits as high as possible and never look back. While Uranus is in Taurus that mentality must change.
Earth is not a commodity, it’s a sovereign being.
It’s alive. It’s never given us permission to pillage and violate it. An economy based on genocide, theft, and oppression is being exposed. The winds of revolution are sweeping the planet and this is playing out in our relationship to the Earth.
The energy of Uranus can feel shocking, like a lightning bolt. Not everyone is going to want to have this conversation. Not everyone is going to want to look. But by 2026, if not sooner, we will no longer have the luxury of choice.
The Wet’Suwet’en Nation is fighting for the future.
This is a sovereign nation which has never ceded their territory to Canada. Yet the RCMP have invaded their nation in the name of the resource extraction industry. Coastal Gas Link is a private company, yet their access to the land is being enforced by the Canadian Police.
Wet’suwet’en matriarchs being arrested during a ceremony for their missing and murdered Indigenous women is a stain that needs deep scrubbing (watch the video here). This is not an isolated incident but an indication that money is more important than the Earth. It’s more important than life.
Retrogrades are times when we are asked to review and reassess.
It’s a tilling of the soil and the period from August 15 through January 10th 2021 is a period to amp up our awareness of these issues and take action.
Imagine someone invited you to stay at their home. You get there and notice you love the books they have on their shelves, you also love the artwork hanging up and the pillow on their couch. So you decide to take them all. Eventually, you decide to sell what you took because you figure you can just go back and take more.
This is stealing, plain and simple. But no one is stopping you so you decide to take it even farther. You really like the location of the home and decide you want to have access to it. You call the police and they proceed to remove the family from their home and make way for your demands.
This is wild to imagine but it’s literally what is occurring all over Canada along with the rest of the world. This is what our current society is built upon.
This Uranus retrograde period is a time to review what has actually occurred throughout history.
It’s a time to get clear on the real history and all it’s shadows and shame. Change is non-negotiable and anyone who wants business as usual will eventually have to answer to our future generations.
We will have to explain why our Earth is destroyed. We will have to explain the destruction we leave behind. We will have to explain what we were doing during this pivotal time. We will have to explain what side of history we are on.
What if instead of living as if the Earth is ours to own; we live to serve it. What if we listen to Indigenous peoples and learn from their traditions? Instead of demolishing and destroying their cultures, homes and families?
The destruction is continuing. Now is the time to speak up, blast the signal and choose the right side of history. This is about choosing to side with the Earth and it’s defenders.
