POETRY PROMPT — #ROADSWEEK
It’s Time to Hit the Roads, Poets!
Poetry prompt
“What is that feeling when you’re driving away from people and they recede on the plain till you see their specks dispersing? — it’s the too-huge world vaulting us, and it’s good-bye. But we lean forward to the next crazy venture beneath the skies.” — Jack Kerouac in On the Road
The theme of the week is ROADS.
I love that the poetry community has kept us creating throughout the summer with weekly poetry themes. It is my turn to keep us moving with the theme: Roads (#roadsweek).
What I am missing most this summer is travel. This is the most flexible time of year for teachers, and I miss the road. I have had many adventures, and it is so difficult to stay home. We usually spend at least a week at the ocean, but I am just not comfortable trying that this year.
I wanted to take my child to national parks this year. He is a rising fourth grader, and this is the time! I cannot wait to revisit Yellowstone and Smoky and Rocky Mountains with him. I want to take him to festivals in Telluride and hike through the Red Wood Forest. I want him to point to a country on the map, and plan to go there. I want to inspire the love of travel in him while he’s young (and I am relatively young).
And so, dear poets, I will have to live in my imagination this summer. I would love to read about your real and metaphoric adventures in travel. What words can you weave about places you’ve seen? Where have your roads taken you? Where do you want to go?
July 28-August 3, the theme is roads. Here are the rules:
- Write poetry with the theme of “Roads.”
- Post your poetry to any publication with the tag #Roadsweek.
- Tag me and reference this post, so I can live your adventures too!
Thank you to Tapan Avasthi for #flowerweek, Jenny Justice for #starweek, Heidi Franklin for #heartweek, and Christina M. Ward for #wingsweek!
