Who Did You Become In The Pandemic?

Ask yourself these critical questions to bring clarity to your life

Last April, they fired me.

After four years as a director for five different non-profit organizations, I suddenly had no job.

But I had work.

I was now the director of a five-year-old’s life. I was a homemaker, homeschooler, parent, and wife.

My years of experience teaching were put to the test. I didn’t know how to “school” my child. My son and I butted heads. We argued, cried, and made up. We lived the school of life. We walked a lot and got to know plants. We hugged a lot.

Life was still on the outside, but inside my heart and thoughts were racing. My journey of a possible ADHD diagnosis and working through deep anxiety were always there while I tried to figure out the best way to homeschool. I did my best to be present when we played.

The first year of COVID-19 was indescribable. I could feel the collective anxiety of the planet.

I had my mid-life crisis during a global crisis. They went together nicely, a kind of “feed two birds with one scone”.

There’s nothing like a lockdown, and 24 hours a day with your family, to bring on a massive transformation.

The experience of COVID-19 has changed all of us.

Our relationships with ourselves, family, space, money, work, and more are all being questioned.

We tossed out old ideas and sprouted new personas. We went inwards and crawled out of our shells.

We asked: “What do I need?”

and then “What really matters?”

We became more present because we had to.

Covid-19 opened our eyes and, hopefully, our hearts in a new way. We skipped some of the small talk and showed our more fragile human side.

This experience collectively tattooed us in different ways.

Some of us felt like we were holding our breath. But life was also allowing some of us to breathe new air. This new air is the insight we gain from self-reflection.

We need to reflect upon what we’ve learned so far.

Who did you become?

Find some time and a quiet space. Grab a drink, a pen, keyboard, or a voice recorder, and ask yourself these questions:

  • What did I learn about myself that I didn’t know before?
  • How will what I’ve learned help me grow or hold me back? What can I do to move forward?
  • What qualities I would like to develop? How can I develop them?
  • What new habit did I start and how can I be consistent with it?
  • Did I give something up? What do I need less of? What do I need more of in my life?
  • What did I learn about space? How do I wish to share space? Do I need more or less of it?
  • What did I learn about time? Am I spending mine wisely?
  • Do I feel connected to my community and is this a priority for me?
  • How do I feel about my personal relationships? Do they feel good? Do all of my current relationships serve me?
  • Am I showing up authentically in the world? How can I be more me?
  • How do I feel about work? Do I need to change something about my job?
  • How has my relationship with food changed?
  • How has my relationship with the outdoors changed? Do I need more fresh air?
  • How will I spend time with my spouse, friends, or kids after things go back to “normal”? How do I wish to be more present with them?
  • How do I care for myself to feel good?
  • What type of physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual work is required to become the person I want to be?
  • How much money do I need to live? To be happy? To be able to build, buy or donate what I want?
  • How self-aware am I now? What can I do to build my self-awareness?

We’ve changed.

We’re always changing, but we just need to make sure we see it. Let’s celebrate our evolution and the unfolding of our authentic selves. It’s time to course-correct. Weed out things we don’t need and plant seeds to grow new beginnings.

I hope that some of these questions inspire you to dive deep into self-reflection. Create your own questions as well. Ask yourself now and later. You’re always changing, and it’s good to be aware of it.

Think about what these past months have awakened in you. Take the time to go deep. Turn your insights into ingredients for the life you want to live.
