Summary

A grandparent recounts a humorous incident where their four-year-old grandson, Aju, resists wearing traditional Indian clothes to a baby shower, questioning the necessity of dressing up for the event.

Abstract

The narrative unfolds as the author prepares for a niece's baby shower, with family members choosing to wear Indian attire. The young grandson, Aju, objects to the traditional kurta-pajama, preferring his comfortable casual wear. Despite the author's attempt to entice him with the prospect of playing with cousins, Aju remains unconvinced, finding the concept of a baby shower and the formal attire ridiculous. The story concludes with the author acknowledging the child's logical point, reflecting on the amusing yet thought-provoking perspective of a child on adult customs.

Opinions

  • Aju finds the idea of a baby shower silly and questions the need to wear special clothes for the occasion.
  • The grandson expresses a clear preference for his everyday comfortable clothing over traditional attire.
  • The author seems to empathize with Aju's perspective, recognizing the validity of his innocent yet logical questioning of social norms.
  • The story is told with a touch of humor, highlighting the clash between a child's straightforward thinking and the complex, often unquestioned, traditions of adults.

Wearing Itchy Clothes to a Baby Shower

We were getting ready to go to my niece’s baby shower. My daughter had come over with her family to attend the event. The dress code wasn’t specified but we were wearing Indian clothes.

I had finished draping my sari when I heard the commotion from my daughter’s room. My then four-year-old grandson, Aju, did not want to wear the traditional kurta-pajama. He loved (still loves) his collarless t-shirts and Dri-Fit shorts.

I hurried upstairs to see if I could change his mind.

“C’mon,” I said, “you’ll get to play with your cousins at the party.”

“It’s not a party,” he said. “And it’s silly to go to a… baby shower.”

“Why is it silly?”

“Because… why can’t that baby take a bath at home? Why do I have to wear itchy clothes to go watch him take a shower?”

He had a point.
