It’s “Put Some Miles on Boots 2023”

Getting out there to see the world on foot.

After hiking to the tallest waterfall in the world, I knew that my love for exploring the great outdoors was here to stay.

I’ve decided to focus on destinations that will challenge me and allow me to experience the beauty of the natural world up close.

From trekking through the Andes to hiking the Appalachian Trail, I’m determined to see as much of the world on foot as I possibly can. Whether I’m tackling a new mountain range or exploring a lesser-known trail, I know that my journey will be filled with breathtaking views, unforgettable experiences, and a sense of accomplishment like no other.

So, join me as I share my wish list for the year ahead and set out to conquer the world, one step at a time.

1. Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

The highest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the world, standing at a towering 19,341 feet. Mount Kilimanjaro is at the top of my wish list of mountains to hike. The challenge of reaching its summit is what draws me to it.

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro has been a dream of mine for years. As a lover of the beautiful continent of Africa, the thought of standing on the rooftop of the continent is alluring.

Although I did spend some time in Zanzibar a few years ago, I have been planning and preparing for this experience for a few years, and this year will be the year that the dreams come true.

I have researched the different available routes, each with its own level of difficulty and physical fitness requirements. I have also sought out a reputable guide service to ensure they have all the necessary equipment.

Excited to take on this challenge and experience the breathtaking views from the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. I will physically and mentally train for the climb, as it’s a demanding journey. Safety is my top priority, so I’ll take into account the risk of altitude sickness and make sure to be aware of all necessary precautions.

2. Mount Toubkal & the Atlas Mountains, Morocco

When I’m done with Mount Toubkal in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, my children must hear about it. Mount Toubkal is a popular destination for hikers and mountaineers from all over the world.

The Toubkal National Park, which surrounds the mountain, offers many hiking trails for all skill levels. The Atlas Mountains are known for their rugged, craggy peaks and picturesque Berber villages nestled in the valleys below – I have always had an interest in the indigenous people of North Africa.

The Berber people have inhabited the Atlas Mountains for thousands of years, and the trail passes through several traditional Berber villages. The Berber people are known for their warm hospitality, and hikers can experience the local culture firsthand by staying in traditional guesthouses or camping in the mountains.

I read the best time to climb Toubkal is during the summer, when the weather is warm and dry. Still, I also have to prepare for the possibility of cold and snowy weather at the summit. I am incredibly excited to plan and prepare for this hike.

Ascending and descending Mount Toubkal and exploring the Atlas Mountains of Morocco would surely be spectacular. The combination of natural beauty and cultural significance makes it a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. I am eagerly counting down the days until I can embark on this unforgettable experience.

3. Mount Nyiragongo, Democratic Republic of the Congo

A UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hiking to the summit of Mount Nyiragongo, a stratovolcano located in the Democratic Republic of Congo, would be another fulfilled fantasy. The opportunity to witness the lava lake and hike an active volcano attracts me to this mountain.

The volcano has erupted at least 34 times since 1882, and it’s known for its large, active lava lake. It’s considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world due to its proximity to heavily populated areas, and it’s a popular destination for volcano enthusiasts.

Dangerous they say? That’s what I like!

It’s one of the most active volcanoes in Africa and one of the few that has a lava lake. I would definitely need a guide service familiar with the volcano and its activity, as well as the current security situation in the area, so this adventure doesn’t end up in front of the papers with the headline “A Walk to Hell.”

The volcano is still active and can be dangerous, so safety should be my top priority including being in great shape.

I am also aware of the political instability in the area, so I stay informed about the current security situation and take all the necessary precautions. This trail also passes through nearby villages, so I’m trying to familiarize myself with the culture and customs of the local people.

Climbing Mount Nyiragongo would be a unique and exciting opportunity for me to witness one of the most active volcanoes in Africa and hike to the summit of a volcano. The experience of hiking and observing the lava lake would be unforgettable, and I can’t wait to embark on this journey.

With a world of possibilities awaiting me, I’m embarking on my dream to travel and explore the wonders of this planet.

From beautiful mountain ranges to these rarely explored forest trails, I plan to dive into all of it with an open heart and mind. And, along the way, I’m eager to create valuable memories that will stay with me for years to come.
