It’s Okay to Have Fear. It Allows One to Have Courage.
Fear, or being afraid is something that is universally experienced from time to time. Personally, I get scared quite often, especially as someone who suffers from social anxiety. Even writing this article, there is that hint of fear that whispers in my ear, “What if my writing isn’t anything special? What if I’m wasting my time pursuing this dream of making a career out of writing online?” These thoughts constantly enter my mind, and it can be quite detrimental to one’s mentality.

We have been taught that being fearless is an admirable quality, which leads me to believe every human on some level is afraid. Sometimes we let fear get the best of us and we get shut down as a result of these feelings. If someone claims they have no fear, they miss out on the virtue of bravery. When someone practices this trait, they are choosing to act despite their inner turmoil of being scared.
Fear comes in several forms from anxiety, doubt, worry, phobia, etc. One may not be able to control how they feel; however, one has the ability to control their own actions and attitude. It may often feel overwhelming, but this is where an opportunity rises for courage to be practiced. It is only when an individual shy’s away from their fears that it will end up consuming them.

Fear holds us back from asking that girl out, going to social gatherings, pursing a business venture, to putting your authentic self out there. Consequently, a person may become unfulfilled; like their self-esteem is harmed due to being defeated by those emotions. Courage can arise from performing any action, if there is fear involved. It is an essential virtue to cultivate in order to better someone’s life. Being courageous is a trait that is seen as highly admirable since it displays mental fortitude.
One must conquer their demons and not succumb to the mental chatter that is ultimately not on their side. It’s quite a challenge to think rationally when the mind and body convince us that we are in danger. Doubt enters our thought process when we constantly second-guess every move we make. Having a lack of trust in oneself and getting stuck inside your head tends to overblow the fear out of proportion.

Once someone manages to overcome a fear, a sense of empowerment emerges, and a newfound confidence is established. Fear is an idea that needs to be understood and utilized for our benefit as human beings. Acting out of fear is often seen as detrimental; however, once someone identifies what scares them and takes conscious efforts to face it head on, then that is when courage is built.
