It’s OK to Become Many Different People as You Travel Through Life

Thoughts On Metamorphosis

I have been several girls and many women. If I could gather them all together in one place, they’d have a lot to talk about, but they wouldn’t all get along. It would make a strange reunion.

We wouldn’t know whether to have it in a church or a bar.

Arguments would be sure to break out. The many regrets around men would be enough to start a seriously long conversation, and I’m sure you’d hear “What the holy hell did we spend all of our money on, anyway?” along with “Hey, you! Depressed single mom! I’d be a lot better off now if I’d never been or met you!”

“What? I made you, Crone!” Melodramatic younger me would wail, “You’d be nothing now without my struggles and hardships making us stronger! Nothing!”

My sensible but royally vain She- of- Whom -It’s -All -About incarnation would jump at the chance to play referee, all shoulder pads and pearls.

“OK! Slutty drunk chicks with questionable taste in men sit over here, wiser, duller but continuously employed ladies way over there.”

Oh, the Humanity. I'm shaking my head, thinking of the many Me’s and all we’ve been through, worked at, failed at, recovered from and achieved.

Some of my lives I stepped into with purpose, excitement, and anticipation. Some were birthed abruptly, painfully, a messy affair.

It is normal, healthy, and a good thing to acknowledge the incarnations we transition through in a single lifetime. Good to look back at the beaten path and see the myriad footprints left behind.

Looking without judgment at all your many selves can help to stop dwelling on mistakes and wrong turns, regretting things said or unsaid, done or undone. Realizing that although you never knew what was around the bend, you walked forward the best you could.

Every persona your spirit has disguised itself as with all its quirks and qualities was vital to your journey, all of the rest of ours, and the design of this universe, whether that sounds outlandish to you or not.

Your past can shine an important light on the path ahead, help you plot your own course, choose and even design who you want to be next.

Make peace with your past beings as you look back, and above all, love and forgive them. Hug it out. Share a few laughs.

I may add to or update this as my own story unfolds and I keep on becoming whatever and whoever is waiting up ahead.

God only knows what she’ll say.
