It’s Not Just Background Noise

The presence of ambient stress…

(Graphic by Author, © Todd B Harrington)

Most are familiar with the concept of ambient noise. It is all those hums, buzzes, rumbles, and other noises that are constantly going on in the background of our daily lives.

They are just there. We, for the most part, accept them and go about our lives being acclimated to what resonates in the world around us.

It has occurred to me that a new phenomenon is surfacing. I’m calling it “ambient stress”.

One person’s stress can go unnoticed, but what is the effect of a stressed population?

Ambient stress seems to be manifesting itself through the exceptional levels of anger, bitterness, confrontation, disregard, and disrespect on display all around us, on a daily basis.

We are inundated with evidence of stress from virtually every component of our daily lives.

The media, by far the most prolific source, propagates stress through their reporting methodologies. Drama, fear, speculation, uncertainty, and outright dishonesty are on display 24/7. Every day, we learn more about just how untruthful the media has been.

A simple drive down the street induces stress levels never known before. Distracted driving, drunk, high, unlicensed, and generally angry and pissed off, road-raged drivers all contribute to a new level of challenge behind the wheel.

You could go on and on. There is no end to the sources of anxiety.

When an elastic band is stretched beyond its capacity to withstand the stress being imposed on it, it snaps.

I am fearful a new element is about to be injected into the ambient noise levels we are surrounded by every day.

Make no mistake, the snaps we are about to start hearing won’t be elastic bands.
