It’s Impossible For Creatives To Be Burned Out

Well, actually…

You’re doing what you love; it’s impossible to be burnt out!

And here’s another person that won’t be getting my Christmas card this year.

Dear creatives, I know how you feel!

If another day goes by and it feels impossible for you to produce ideas, and on top of that, you feel tired, irritable, and uninspired, that might be more than a “simple” creative block.

That could be burnout.

But you’re doing what you love; isn’t it impossible for you to experience burnout?

Well, actually…

The Causes And The Consequences

Last Thursday, I overdid it.

After a hectic week, I decided to write nine articles in one day, “Once they’re done, I can move on to something else”, I confidently said.

I also had two business calls and had to read some material for my next piece.

It’s OK cause I felt productive and I wasn’t tired. Or at least that’s what I thought.

For the following days, I was unable to concentrate. I kept jumping from project to project, dragging my attention but not sticking to anything.

It’s been four days; I still don’t feel much better because I kept going.

Creative burnout, the type of fatigue common in creative professionals, stems from good intentions.

You want to deliver great work because you care!

This may lead you to put too much pressure on yourself or take on more than you can chew.

Burnout makes you feel as if you’ll never be able to create anything good, ever ever again! It feels like it’s the end of your creativity forever.

It’s not, though; you just need a break.

Causes Of Burnout

Here are some of the causes of creative burnout:

  • Striving for perfection.
  • Accepting yet another project when you really want to say no, or stretching your availability (poor boundaries).
  • Too much on your plate.
  • Self-doubt and not feeling like you’re good enough.
  • General stress added on top of all the other things: no sleep, poor nutrition, and other unhealthy habits. It all compounds!

Reflection

In this case, prevention is better than cure.

You’re not a sponge that you can squeeze till the last drop of creativity has been expelled.

You are human; you need to rest and re-evaluate your creative methods and boundaries.

Maybe that pace you were working at before wasn’t healthy in the first place?

Maybe writing every day is actually hindering your creativity instead of fuelling it?

What works for you? How can you make sure you take the proper breaks to disconnect from your work?

Do you have any self-care rituals in place?

Take this burnout as a warning sign that something isn’t working.

Approach it with kindness and write down your own rules. Pause before you start to feel like you can’t take it anymore.

Take a break, go for a walk, do something else.

Your creativity depends on your mental health, and you are the only one able to know and respect your limits.

Just because you love something doesn’t mean you can’t get burned out.
