It’s hard to stay fit while drinking alcohol — just ask AJ McLean

Backstreet Boys singer AJ McLean quit alcohol a year ago yesterday, and the associated physical change he has undergone is astounding.

In an interview with Today, he detailed how punting booze and fast food from his life gave him the energy to start working out five times a week and be more present for his family.

McLean, who partied hard when the Backstreet Boys were at their peak and found himself in rehab more than once, says he’s now in the best shape of his life.

“Drinking caused weight gain, but it also weighed down my mental state,” he told Today.

“AJ is kind of the celebrity who was living the rockstar lifestyle and Alex (his full name) got stuffed down,” he explained. “But now I’ve come to a place where they can both coexist.”

Fitness focus

McLean’s path following sobriety mirrors that of many — we tend to go hard in the other direction and really embrace health and fitness. Our restless, novelty seeking brains need something active to replace our drinking activities.

I know that’s true of me, too— I spend every idle night I have at the gym.

As the success guru Grant Cardone says: if you want to meet the Devil, have white space on your calendar.

Anyone who drinks too much knows how much of a toll it takes physically. You feel and look tired all the time because you’re not sleeping well. Your skin is dry. You’re always kind of soft from bloating.

AJ McLean is just one example of many of what can happen when you get alcohol out of your life. I hope his story inspires you to kick booze — and maybe even get refocused on your health and fitness!
