It’s Good That Some Things Never Change
Uncertainty is tiring
I pride myself as someone who can adapt to new situations really well. But deep down, I really don’t like changes.
You might say, who does?
There’s this Japanese saying about “having a thin and long life”. This expression comes from the tradition of serving Soba, a Japanese thin buckwheat noodle, to wedding couples.
Having a thin life means a monotone life, a life without many surprises but in a beautiful way. If I could choose, I’d rather have this Soba-inspired kind of life than roller coaster dramatic one. A slow yet fulfilling life.
Perhaps in my imagination, I would write and read a lot in that kind of life. So although from outside it looks like there’s nothing happening, there will be a lot of happening inside my mind, I’m talking about creativity and intellectual pursuit.
That’s why I’m not really a big fan of external changes. In a sea of life full of uncertainty, I cherish things that stay the same. Their unchangedness is a solace. It comes in form of a TV show I like, favorite food, going to the beach, or books I enjoyed since when I was a teenager.
In a life of uncertainty, it’s healthy to have some kind of anchor so you don’t get washed away by the waves. We need some things to preserve and to hold tightly so we don’t lose ourselves.
It’s always nice that some things never change.
