It’s Easy to Get Discouraged with Medium Stats
Just have a positive attitude and keep writing
Sometimes looking at your Medium statistics can be quite discouraging. The thirty day rolling stats can look pretty good and then take a big hit when a good day of views drops off. If the views are not consistent, it can be a little discouraging to see a larger number drop off than gets picked up.
If you read articles about other people having some great success and you are not doing that well, it can be a little depressing. When some people have thousands of views per day and thousands of claps the first day an article comes out, that is an indication that their stats are pretty good.
You may wonder why it can’t be you. The “why not me” syndrome may kick in if you allow it to invade your space. You want to get articles to go viral, but it just doesn’t happen. Other people are doing it, and they are making money. You may wonder what is wrong and not know how to fix it.
Is there a secret you don’t know? The secret seems to be to just keep at it. Keep writing and submitting. Don’t give up.
The writing on Medium should be fun, but it certainly cannot be viewed as a “get rich quick scheme” by any stretch of the imagination. Unless you are REALLY LUCKY, success will take a while. It will likely take longer than you expected.
With thousands of articles being published every single day on Medium, there is a lot of competition for read time. It is not surprising that some articles earn only pennies or nothing at all.
It is interesting to compare the views with the earnings. Here are some recent earnings: 5 views earned .05, 11 views earned .10, 13 views earned .17, 128 views earned 1.01, 168 views earned .10, 180 views earned .11, 200 views earned .04.
Another stat had a daily view rate of 577 earning .95. Then another day there were 287 views which earned 1.68. Then 780 views earned .49. It was interesting, but it did not calculate reading time.
There is also little rhyme nor reason why you can get 800 views one day and less than 100 another.
You work so hard and try to find some success. You keep hoping that people will read your stories so that you can start to earn more than a few dollars for all your work. It is frustrating and discouraging at times when success seems elusive with your hourly rate next to nothing.
Medium should not be expected to take the place of a full-time job or even to earn much at all. With such a small percentage (about 6%) of writers earning even $100 a month, the competition is fierce. However, earning a little extra each month should be possible if someone keeps at it and is patient. Unless you get really fortunate to have one or more big viral stories, it is unlikely that you will hit it big quickly. It is possible to make some extra money with consistency and determination.
It’s a good place for people who do not really need money. Then the earnings, when they come, will be a bonus.
It takes time, but it should work out with lots of hard work and perseverance. Many people give up too soon when they are trying to make a success of something. Don’t let depression get hold of you.
Don’t worry about the stats. Just keep trying!!!
