Abstract

MEDIUM THINGS

It’s Definitely Possible To Earn A Full-time Income On Medium

Because anything is possible on Medium

If there’s one question that I think a lot of writers (especially new ones) who join the MPP ask, it’s this — can I really earn a full-time income from just writing on Medium? I know it was on my mind for a while as well.

It’s been about a year plus now since I became a writer on the MPP and I’ve had my fair share of success (and failure) when it comes to my earnings.

To date, my best month saw me bring in just under $550 and my worst, just under $5. I’ve also been fortunate enough to have been in that ever exclusive group of writers who earn at least $100 a month for 5 straight months before I stumbled and fell out of it. And for the last 3 months, I’ve been trying to get back into it and nearly came close in August when I was just shy of $3 to hit $100 for the month.

I put it down to not being consistent which is something that I’ve noticed is one of the surest ways to get some amount of success on this platform.

But with all that’s said and done, after writing almost consistently for the past 14 months, the nearest I’d gotten to my goal of hitting my first $1000 a month from my writing was in January when I made $549. Even that was with a slice of luck because one article really took off and made about 90% of the entire earnings for that month.

Obviously, doubts started to creep into my mind and I was wondering, can I really make a full-time income on Medium?

The answer? Yes, you can.

You see, for every writer that makes $10 from writing on this platform, there is another who makes $10,000. That’s why whenever we get the monthly newsletter sent to us writers, we’d see that the highest-earning writer for the previous month always earns in the 5-figure region.

Always.

For the last 14 months, I’ve not seen the highest-earning writer earn anything less than $20,000. It’s always above $20,000. And I’ve always (I’m sure all of you as well) wondered who this writer is? And if it’s always the same person or a different writer every month.

From reading about the experiences of some of the more experienced writers on this platform (like Shaunta, Shannon, Ben, Tim, etc.), your earnings will yo-yo from month to month. Personally, I’ve experienced that as well. From just $5 in my first month to $25 in my second and suddenly jumping up to $78 in my third month. Then it stayed between $70 to $80 for 3 months and suddenly, it went up to $549.

Some of the bigger names have reported that in one month, they’d earn $10,000 only for the following month to see it drop to around $6,000. That’s a huge drop if you ask me. And these writers will tell you the same thing, that they’ve been doing the same thing every month.

The fact of the matter is, they are still earning in the 4-figure region and well above the national minimum wage in the US which in 2020 is around $1,200 a month. That is roughly a full-time income if you do some basic calculations.

  • The hourly minimum wage in the US = $7.25
  • $7.25 x 8 hours a day = $58 a day
  • $58 x 5 days a week = $290 a week
  • $290 x 4 weeks a month = $1,160 a month (roughly)

Of course, this is based on information I got from the internet. Since I don’t live in the US, I don’t really know for sure what the minimum wage is like over there but if the info I got is correct, then $1,160 a month is the minimum wage and that is considered full-time income for some (or most) people.

And based on recent articles (and screenshots posted on the numerous FB Medium groups I’m in) from excited writers, a lot of them are earning much more than $1,000 a month from their writing on Medium. So yes, it is very much possible to make a full-time income on Medium.

Let’s take a look at another example that is closer to home for me.

I’ll give an example for my country, Malaysia. The minimum wage here is Ringgit Malaysia (RM) 1,100 a month which is roughly $270. When I made $549 in January, I basically earned double the national minimum wage of my country. Is that a full-time income? Yes, it is. It’s what a lot of average Malaysians (and the majority of migrant workers in Malaysia) earn on a monthly basis.

In February, I made $294 which again is above the minimum wage. Again, I made a full-time income from my writing.

The 2 times I made a full-time income from my writing was down to mainly this one article taking off at the start of the year.

To date, it’s made $640 with 95% of that coming in the first 3 months of it being published.

Honestly, if that article continued to do well until now and if at least 50% of my articles every month take off like that, I’ll be hanging out with those writers making 4-figures every month on Medium.

And that my friends, is the trick to it.

Viral articles that take off and have a long shelf (internet) life

The only trick to making good money on this platform is by writing articles that will not only take off but that will also stay relevant and attract readers long after it is written.

Writers that make great money on here will tell you that a lot of their income is from only 20% of their work because this 20% are the ones that took off and have stayed popular. This 20% are the ones that are probably making about $500 to $1,000 each whereas the other 80% are probably the ones making from cents to just tens of dollars — which of course when added up will still contribute to the overall income.

“Welcome to Medium, where words matter.”

In Medium’s very own tagline, they’ve mentioned the key to success on the platform — where words matter.

Articles that contain words that matter are the ones that will take off and gain the traction it needs to do well. These articles are the ones that will continue to stay relevant for a long time and continue to earn money long after being published.

These are the kinds of articles you will need to write. What kind exactly? Only you and your readers will know.

Although we probably won’t know for sure just how many writers there are on this platform that makes a full-time income from just writing on Medium, there are enough to show you that it’s definitely possible to earn a full-time income on Medium.

The questions now are:

  • are you willing to learn how to do it?
  • are you willing to put in the effort required to do it?

I know what my answers are to these 2 questions and if you’re serious about wanting to earn a full-time income from Medium as well, I know you’ll find the answers that you’ll need to figure it out.

I mean, if there are those who can do it, why not us as well?
