It’s Definitely A No From Me, Vocal!
Why I Will Not Renew My Vocal Membership & Why You Shouldn’t Too
Today I woke up to an email from Vocal reminding me that today’s the last day to renew my Vocal+ membership.
In previous months, I would ponder on this for a minute or two and be inclined to renew and test my luck on the platform, but this time it’s a definite no from me.
Unfortunately, since embarking on Vocal earlier in 2021, I’ve been disappointed with my earnings.
Despite having published over 70 long form articles in the last 8 months, ranging between 800–2000 words each, and promoting it every 2–3 days on Pinterest and Facebook, I’d expect a decent amount to come in. Thats not the case for me and the maximum I have earned on the platform per month is 0,60c .
My Small Experiment With Vocal
I’m not sure if its an issue with their system or an inside-thing, but I find that the views are not honestly recorded. I did a small experiment a month ago and promoted my article (linked below) daily on relevant facebook groups, Pinterest and my own youtube channel. I sent a link to over 20 friends to get some feedback on the article.
The results at the end of the month were great:
- 15 out of 20 did say they read it and gave me some valuable input on the story.
- My story was liked by subscribers on youtube and got some comments.
- The story pin I pinned on pinterest got 60 views.
- The story link got likes on comments on facebook.
Overall the results were promising, yet the Vocal platform has totally different results. For all the daily promotion and marketing I did to the story, it only got a total of 5 views for that full month!
This tells me one thing: Vocal is not honest with reporting story views. Apart from that, there has been endless reports on the ethics and treatment of employees in Vocal, enough to turn me off the platform.
I’ve decided that my journey on Vocal has ended and its not worth my time or mental energy to invest further in the platform.
Vocal is not worth my time and I definitely would not recommend it to anyone wanting to make income online. At the early stages, bonuses were great but eventually they do stop and I was left with pennies at the end of the month.
If you are making money on Vocal, then I am happy for you and applaud you for your success. But unfortunately, most of us are struggling and we would be better off directing our creative energy elsewhere.
My Next Steps:
Entering the next few weeks, I intent to invest the majority of my time on Medium. I have been neglecting my writing on Medium for the last two months since I’ve been juggling exams and the creation of my new Youtube channel, but now its time to get things straight and commit.
- Focusing on my family at the moment is the main priority for me. My autistic 5-year old has been recently having a hard time as he transitions to a different special school and I have not been able to give him 100% of my time unfortunately. In order to be there for him in every stage of his growth, I need to dedicate more down-time to connect more with him in this critical stage. Wish me luck :)
- I hope to be able to grow my family’s income drastically without sacrificing my time with my family. It takes consistency, commitment and a load of patience, as both myself and my partner are students. I intend to dedicate a few hours a week to my passive income streams and assist my family financially.
- I aim to publish 1–2 articles on Medium a week to different publications. Currently, Illumination is my favorite go-to publication and I am super grateful for the fact that it has provided a home for over 85 of my articles. Yet, I need to wisdom my horizons and aim to get at least 1 article a week approved to a entrepreneurship-based publication, in order to experiment with the exposure and engagement results.
