It’s All Right to Cry | Write Here Wednesday
Your stories about feeling allllllll the feelings

Hey writers! Brief programming note here: Hi, I’m Amy! I’m a senior editor here at Medium, where I work on Creators Hub, Human Parts, and some other stuff. I also write essays and fiction and novels, much like, I’m guessing, many of you. I’m taking over Write Here prompts for the time being. A giant thanks to Jolie A. Doggett who launched this series as a new space for ideas, tips, and topics to help you get started writing on Medium — or get unstuck from writer’s block.
We love the way creators come to Medium for community and inspiration. Speaking of which, here is your weekly roundup of pieces inspired by Write Here prompts. Check out these stories and keep writing your own (use the tag “Writehere,” so we can find them!) and you may be featured next week!
One of this week’s prompts was “When was the last time you cried?” Here’s what you had to say:
I Didn’t Cry, I Sobbed
And just like that, the revelation had reared up, making me see that grief does not end. It doesn’t get put into a bottle to sit on a shelf. No, grief is something we encounter over and over again. — Nancy Blackman
When Was The Last Time You Cried?
I cried because my therapist asked me how I thought my life would be different if I had been diagnosed with autism and ADHD earlier than age 30…You asked me when was the last time I cried. The answer is: I have therapy once a week, so you do the math. — Extra Holly
I Was Living in a Gray Zone and Couldn’t Find My Soul
I cried over everything. / I cried because I felt validated. / Because it’s still just an unfulfilled promise. / Because Husband told me we’re okay. / I’m not sure if we are. / Because my dad died. / And his memorial sucked. / My daughter suffered trauma. / My response was horrible. / I’m upset over my dog. / It rained and it’s beautiful. — Natasha Hawthorn
We also asked about your favorite quotes, and you shared:
A Quote That Reminds Me the Meaning of Freedom of Expression
“If we don’t believe in freedom of expression for people we despise, we don’t believe in it at all.” — Noam Chomsky
This Noam Chomsky quote always makes me realize how important it is to have those different voices in my feed. What a big part of democracy it is that everyone has the right to express oneself. — Rummy Kaur
A Wake Up Quote
“What if disappointment is really the exact appointment your soul needs to radically encounter God?” — Lysa TerKeurst
When you schedule to meet with someone you’re essentially scheduling an appointment with them. You plan for it. You set the date, the time, and location and then you show up and have your meeting.
Well, disappointment works kind of the same way, except the time, date, and location has already been decided for you. You can’t really plan for when you’ll be disappointed. You may anticipate it but you can never know for sure the exact moment you’ll be disappointed. Life experiences decide that for you. — Marina Zherebnenko
It Me!
“All of this was going to happen anyway, irrespective of the pandemic, but over time our coffee sessions take on the form of a daily miniature vacation through which we sustain ourselves by embracing the crumbly pleasures of a shortbread biscuit, or the rich chocolaty warmth of a mocca, or the joy of finding ourselves pleasurably adrift in the currents of a gently ripening early afternoon.” — Usman Ahmad on Medium
I love Amhad’s use of “currents.” The idea of floating on calm, rolling waves that move us, however gently.
A current that brings joy in the slowness, intentionality of life. — Michelle Noel
